Next generation VAG diesel info ???

Featured Replies

Does anyone know the specs of, and when we might see the next generation of VAG diesel engines that I've heard will be replacing the PD units soon. Any links would be appreciated.

Cheers.

it will run on diesel

wonder if they will make them out of aluminium? or do they do that now?

It might use Peizo injectors as per the PD170 or it might use common rail injection :p

The Peizo injectors are common rail.....

VAG are ditching PD in favour of common rail as it allows greater control and more injections per cycle than the PD system. They're going for piezo injectors as they allow the greatest degree of accuracy with the fuel delivery.

You might want to read this:

Common rail - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kind of, but the 2.0 is a PD as the piezo injectors are still run on the camshaft.

Its kind of a PD/commonrail cross over.

Going to say the PD 170 is still a PD system and not true common rail as per the HDI et all.

I would suggest looking at the 3.0 TDI to get an idea of where it is going

Ahh I see. I know VAG are ditching the PD system but am not sure when.

So the PD injectors are piezo too on the PD170? Hmm....how about the PD140?

And the 3.0 TDi? Is that common rail or PD? Curious. :)

The PD140 is normal PD injectors and IIRC the 3.0TDI is proper common rail.

Interesting. So how'd they get the PD140 through emissions when the 1.9 could not be done? It must have something funky about it.....surely?

16v, different injectors lots of honing of the intake and exhaust system etc.

Not sure, but the 1.9 PD105 made it through so who knows

Ah I see. So it wasn't that straightforward for them hence them dropping PD ultimately. The PD105 I imagine got through because it's only 105bhp and it's emissions should be lower. The higher output cars will be much harder to keep clean.

I'd love a go in a PD170....or even better the 3.0 TDi. Mmmm...... :)

The 6 litre V12 TDI going in the Q7 churns out about 500 BHP and colossal torque but has already mangaed to pass the Euro V emission standards due in 2010.

A pretty good idea of things to come in the VAG diesel camp in the next few years.

I wonder if dragon will do a tuning box for it?
