new MAF = one happy vrs

Featured Replies

After a few weeks of poor fuel consumption (34mpg average) and car generally feeling a little slow, i bit the bullet and decided to replace the mass air flow meter.

34mpg??? Ouch..... Glad it's all sorted anyway mate. The MAF does a surprising amount it would seem. :D

On petrols you've got the lambda sensor to regulate fuel intake....a dodgy MAF would just result in flat spots, lack of power, lumpy idle etc, but on a weasel it's the cars main way of regulating fuel injection aside from load detection.

I think mines been broken since i bought the car i hardly ever get 45+.

Nothing to do with the way you drive? :)

Lol. Check out the list of mods. He can't drive sensibly with that lot.

cheers mate, if you disconnect it one can see just how much it actually does:thumbup:

i tried cleaning it but that did nothin, so i thought the way forward was to replace.

really glad i did its like driving a different car.

Just depends on what kind of driving you do tho, the weisel is rubbish for the first ten mins so if your journeys are short then you wont ever see High mpg readings.

my journey on the other hand is 23 miles to sheffield so the car has plenty of time to warm up and i usually see the sunny side of 50mpg.

The car was smoking its t!ts off, idling like my old cammed golf 1800 16v used to and getting around 34mpg average whilst driving like my foot was filled with helium. AND THE STUPID DEALER STILL COULDN'T FIND THE FAULT:mad:

That's not what I've found. I used to commute 35 miles to/from work and averaged around 46mpg. I've moved house and the commute is now down to 5 miles (or 10 minutes drive) and I'm still averaging around 45mpg.

on a journey to work number one (6 miles) i get 35 mpg average,

on a journey to work number two (23 miles) i get 51 mpg average.

i think i get this because the 6 mile journey consists of back roads  and the 23 miles is mostley motorway and A roads.

Also the engine is hardly up to operating temp with the 6 mile.

hmmm never thought about the MAF think i need to invest in a new one mine is seeming to be a tad thirsty on the diesel

glad you got yours sorted mate

Ill admit going to and from the odd skoda meets, the car does get put through it paces. but i dont mind Crap fuel MPG when i drive like that, But when being an OAP i want the MPG its ment to get like the high 50.

And yes i have a big list of mods but I dont have the Big REMAP "yet":D

I think my MAF is on the way out, MPG is getting a little low. is it just a simple swap over of the sendor of does the ECU have to be reset

Those of you getting 50mpg what kind of speeds are you reaching?

I can get 50 if I don't break the speed limits but I have to try VERY hard to achieve it. car mostly wants to do 40mpg but that is going everywhere above the speed limit?

You should find that cruising between 70 and 80mph results in 55mpg ish. The optimum speed is somewhere around 50mph, where over 60mpg is achievable.

The ECU is adaptive, so will learn directly. Simple swap.

Hmmn

If I'm to average fifty mpg I can't go above 70

70 to 80 gives me very high forties

Me too. I have to do a very long journey to get an average of over 50mpg....either that or I have to crawl along at under 70 mph which is bloody painful.

The warmer the weather, the better the mpg though. Not only does the engine warm up far quicker but the volumetric efficiency drops. Hot less dense air = less fuel injected. Means less power but better economy providing you don't drive it harder to maintain the same levels of performance as when the air is colder.

Effectively driving 'like for like' it would mean better mpg.

It's an easy change. Simple test is to unplug it. Perfomance should drop *dramatically*.
