fix for vibration rattle - drivers side dash?

Featured Replies

Had my RS in four times now for this annoying vibration rattle thing which happens on the right hand side round the vent - if you like......

The garage claim its something to do with the air con even though it happens when the air con isnt turn on........ It tends to go away if when not idle (driving) or i increase the revs just very slightly on stand still so just above idle.

Anyone had the same problem and have a fix - im sick of going back to the dealer for them to "have a listen" and then them call skoda technical because they are too lazy to have the dash out - customer service is rubbish!

Please help guys!

;)

I've got an intermittent rattle that sounds like it's from the same area but I think mine is the door panel. I get the feeling you need to track them down and fix it yourself.

Mines defo the dash - think you are correct though about sorting myself!

I just think the dealer should sort new cars....... if i bought it second hand then fair enough!

My door rattles a bit if I've got the music turned up a bit. It's the panel directly below the window, I know because if I press it when it's making the nosie the noise stops. I don't think I can be bothered taking it to the dealer though unless it gets worse and/or more rattles develop.

I have a MK2 Octy vRS and also experience a passenger side dash rattle. It seems to occur on a cold morning for the first 15 minutes and after that it goes away.

Now I am by no means an authority, mainly due to the fact that I know absolutey nothing about cars but....

On the underside of the glove box, about a foot apart are two screws, which require a smallish star shaped alllen key. I tightened these, very slightly and that seemed to fix the rattle. I did book it in to the delaer to have a look, but cancelled as I thought by the time i had driven there it wouldnt be doing it, and it would be a waste of evryones time.

As it happens i think i need to tighetn the screws a little more, but it definately worked.

I also have a rattly rear view mirror, which if i pinch front and back together, stops. Quality.

Just realised you said driver side, sorry. I guess there could be screws there too.

@ octaviarsman - It might be worth checking these on the Drivers Side. Theres a couple under the steering wheel and the ones under the Fuse Box cover.

Btw have you had any phone kit installed etc...maybe forgot to tighten some of the above :)

Send Czechmate a PM, I know the garage had the dash out on his due to some rattles, may/may not be the same ones :)

Cheers buddy

  • 6 months later...

mines has the same i find that if i lift the bonnet and fiddle around with the wires i.e make sure there connected it stops drive it hasrd it comes back again, have yet to narrow it down to a single part yet though

I had a rattle on mine that I was sure was comming from the dash, somewhere arround radio / middle vent holes. I've tried so many things to fix it up (new car) and nothing seemed to help. At the and it was one silly thing. Between rear view mirror and the roof there is a little plastic tube (maybe only in cars with auto dimming mirror) that is touching the windshield. It was that tube. I put a little piece of double sided tape between the top of the tube and the glass and it solved the problem. For me, it was one month struggle as I was sure it was comming from the dash. Even mechanic went on ride with me and could hear it from the dash. Funny, isn't it? It was comming from the above and everyone was sure it was from the dash.

Worth to check, might help some of you guys.

I've got a couple of rattles in mine... octy 2 vRS.

I above the Passenger Seat storage compartment, one somewhere in the back, and one down by the handbrake.

Most of them seem to stop when the car is warmed up... and a couple of them have been put down as the leather rubbing against the plastic trim

I've been in a couple of new octy's and they all make the same noise ;)

I had a rattle in the same area and it turned out (according to the dealer) to be where the light switch is - he stuck a foam pad there and the noise has (mostly) gone. Try pressing the light switch surround when you are hearing the noise to see if it goes.

The biggest rattle in my L&K is the dimming mirror - namely the on/off button. The glass also vibrates a lot and blurrs the rear view badly. New mirror/windscreen mount or an engine mount problem?

Hi all, this topic is old as the hills now, just thought I'd share my buzzing behind drivers side dash.

2010 Octavia 2.0 diesel Right Hand Drive (convert my descriptions for LHD as needed).

My buzz was a vibration, not an electrical relay.

So my issue was a loose bolt that holds the relay mount to the A pillar cross member. Sounds easy yeah?

(Oh make sure it's this by dismantling as below until you can get in there and tap around, the bracket in question is above the acceleratior pedal).

Put your reading glasses on and try to imagine my frustration in finding this bolt and then the repetitive internal chanting WTF?, WTF?, who does this? Etc...

There are 2 bolts holding said relay bracket, one is really easy to get to, just pop drivers side-dash-cover off; it's the 10mm hex bolt (has torx in middle too), it screws in dead ahead, easy as pie if this is loose though it won't be, because the other one is impossible to get to so it will be that one - have you ever dropped a spanner anywhere near a car, it will go directly to the centre under the car, because it can.

The other bolt is where all the internal swearing comes in. To get to it you will need to remove the lower dash cover where your knees would slam into if you rear-ended a tank.

Hint: you need to pop out the headlight switch surround and the silver strip around that, and little silver strip on console side too, this will allow you to remove the lower cover.

Now the games begin, word here if you have large hands, make sure your insurance is current, because you may well be calling them saying "someone broke into my garage and totally smashed the hell out of my car, the cuts on my hands are purely coincidental."

I found the next bit easier after freeing up the fuse box and letting that swing, also you can unclip the relay block, right of steering column & above the acceleratior pedal and pop the individual relay things out of that block too, this will allow you to shove each relay back in the void they are coming from so they too are out of the way.

Soooooo a bit about this 2nd bolt, it screws in as if there was no dash at all in the car, and no windscreen either. To get to this from the footwell - (I'll explain this as well as I can); it screws in from the firewall-side of the A pillar above the acceleratior pedal, you will have to kneel on the ground and feel with your left hand (palm facing you) for this bolt, it's close to the top of the square cross member & is hmmmm, left edge of what you are feeling with your left hand.

Now you have found it let the internal swearing begin and repeat after me, "WTF"... :-)

It is 10mm, I did manage to get a very straight ring spanner on it and took 20 1/16th turns to tighten it until my eyes started bleeding ( I could hit a bridge at full speed and this thing will still be snug).

But hey it may not be this, as said at the top, when you tap the relay bracket thing, it will make this same buzzing sound, if it is I hope I saved someone a lot of grief.
