Brake squeal - where??

Featured Replies

I've developed a squeal from the front end which is driving me nuts, it's a high pitched squeal during straight ahead driving. I've had the wheels off but I can't find the problem !

The noise stops when the brakes are applied, AND when the wheel is turned right.

Any ideas where should I be looking?

Are you sure the noise is from the front? When you hear the noise when driving, pull the handbrake up one click and see if the noise gets worse or goes away. I found my back brakes to be the problem and the dealer just copper greased the pads. still makes the noise though

Sorted it the easy way ... got the power wash out and blasted the front discs and calipers both sides.

the rusty lips on the discs can cause the noise , as they will catch the pad when driving , knocking the rust off the edges and copper slipping the pad edges and backs should cure the noise (for a while at least)

I have the same problem with mine, verified the same way. I think it is a seizing rear caliper - probably the nearside one because the disc feels a little hotter. It is going to the dealer on Friday to be checked out (it is still under warranty).

They could not find anything wrong and the caliper was not seized. They thought it must be brake dust and so they steam cleaned the area. The sound seems to have gone for now, but I am a bit surprised that it was simple as that. I wonder whether lightly bevelling the edges of the pads would be a more durable solution..
