suspected wheel bearing- how long can i leave it?

Featured Replies

I've been getting a droning noise when driving at around 40mph for a while now but been noticing that is getting louder. I suspect its the one of the rears as I was parking it on the drive way but the kurb wasnt dropped along the full length so was hitting the full height kurb with one of my rear wheels.

Basically i'm half way between services and was weghing up if i can leave it till then or if its going to catestrophically going to break sending a wheel down the road!

Ive not been able to physically check to see if the wheel moves as where i now live the grounds a bit rough and covered in gravel.

if you leave it long enough, it will knacker the suspension too, and the wheel may come off eventually. depends how bad it is really

Jack up the rear of the car and spin each wheel in turn while listening for any rumbling noise this should tell you which side it is. Then hold each side of the wheel try and move it from side to side to see if there is any lateral movement in the wheel bearing ?

If it's just rumbling with no real movement obvious you may be ok to run it to the next service assuming you are not planning any lengthy trips away from home ! :D

Otherwise, I'd get it replaced !

Mine had this for about 8 months didn't know what it was, however was repaired under warranty and so glad i asked. Guess it was expensive but like I say so very glad it was sorted. Noise was getting unbearable. Fromt driver wheel
