I have red on hear a few times people talking about clearing/resetting the ECU.

2 questions :

1: what, if any benifit would this have on the engine?

2: if it is a benifit how is it done?

None as far as I know really.

Don't know how its done without special eqipment and doubt there are any benefits to the actual engine through resetting the ECU. I imagine a VAG-Com would do it, but I reset mine using a star performance switchable remap module which lets me put the ECU back to standard with one program or change to the performance program.

There are some known electrical gremlins with the Fabia that may be resolved by resetting the ECU, such the one-touch electric windows feature not working (fairly common).

I also believe that some ECUs are adaptive to the driving conditions and type of fuel your using. For example, if it was a petrol engine and you were using cheap supermarket fuel, but then filled up with Shell V-Power normally the ECU would take a while before it got used to the new fuel, but resetting it would allow it adjust quicker for the better performance fuel. BTW - This bit is accoding to 5th Gear when they done the Reort on different Fuels and the effect on BHP, so don't blame me if its utter tosh!!

There are many ECU's in the car, the ECU for the windows is quite different than the one for the engine.

I've been informed that disconnecting the battery for '30 mins' resets the ECU (engine ECU from what you say I presume?), is this the case Lummox?

Also informed that doing this means that mods such as pannel filters are 'adapted' for instanty rather than having to wait for the ECU to adapt over how many hundred miles is takes?

Would disconnecting the battery for 30 mins reset all the ECUs then?

I've found that by reprogramming the ECU with the standard map resolves the windows issue for me, the process of doing that must link in with the window ECU somehow, don't know the technicalities though.

Yes it will blank all adapted values.

Cant see why the windows would be connected to the engine.
