Recommend me a DVD player

Featured Replies

Hopefully someone out there can help me cos I've spent the morning researching and can't seem to find anything! I'm in the market for a new hi-fi dvd player which a budget of 50-60 quid max and want the following:

- Multi-region

- Plays all manner of DVD/CD recordable/rewritable, etc (with the exception of DVD-RAM)

- Coax/optical out

- S-Video/RGB/Scart out

- Plays DivX/MPEG4/MP3 on data DVD and CD

- Reasonably quiet (so I can actually hear what I'm watching above it!)

Oh, and I'd love to be able to go somewhere and buy it today, but not essential!

Anyone recommend something that fits the bill? :D

Thanks, Chris

Samsung DVD HD-860

Its very very quiet but does have a bright blue LED on the front when turned on which annoys some.

Multi-region isnt standard but you can find the codes on the web (or via PM to a fellow Briskodian ;))

Off the top of my head it has everything that you need. The only annoying thing is that it has no scart through-put (scart input).

I've downloaded lots of old Top Gear reviews etc. as avi files and it plays them perfectly.

EDIT: Looks like the 860 has been replaced with the 870 http://www.play.com/Electronics/Electronics/GENEC/261/341/-/3336508/Samsung_DVD_HD870_XEU_DVD_Player_With_HDMI_Upscaling/Product.html?searchtype=genre but I dont know if you can make it multi-region. IIRC Bengie has the 850 and is pleased with that too.

Steer clear of Umax / Yamada from our own experience concerning reliability (and many others too according to lots of 'user reviews' I've read).

We got a discontinued Pioneer DiVX, etc 9 months ago (so no good giving you model number etc) - these days I try to buy Pioneer or Panasonic, a bit dearer but so good reliability wise.

Have you had a look at the kiss dvd players, might be a little over budget, the dp 1000 looks like its still available for under 100 quid

they play pretty much anything

Full DVD/MPEG-4/DivX?/XviD/CD/MP3/Ogg Vorbis/CD-RW/DVD+-RW compatibility

if you up the budget they do wifi/networked dvd/media players

I picked up a pioneer that does the same for about
