Forgive me if these questions have been asked and answered before but I am a new member.

I have just bought a 1997 Felicia Estate and I discovered that when I switch on the side lights I get the correct light on the dashboard but if I then switch on dipped or full beam I don't get any more lights coming on. Someone suggested there was an electrical short behind the dashboard - any comments? All advice welcome and appreciated!

Also, I am trying to find out the engine and gearbox numbers. The VIN plate holds the info I believe but it's not clear what the various numbers/codes are. The description in the handbook doesn't really help - or am I just being a bit thick? :(

There are warning lights for the dip and main beam, I suspect that the bulbs have blown.

There should be a data sticker on the boot floor under the carpet and in the service book - that will hold the engine, gearbox and paint codes, along with codes for other options. This site will decode them for you:

Felicia engine codes are: AEE 1.6 petrol, AEF 1.9 diesel, 135M and 136M 1.3 petrol.

As for serial numbers, the engine number should be on the registration document and stamped somewhere on the engine block. can't help you with the gearbox number.
