Headlights and driving abroad?

Featured Replies

For an ordinary NON HID UNIT, remove the headlight unit, take the dipped beam lamp out of headlamp, and you will see the shutter through the hole. You can gently persuade the shutter up or down with a screwdriver. I know this because only the R/H headlamp on my Octy II has the external shutter control. The L/H one has to be done as detailed above.

Both headlights have the Shutter control lever. The drivers side one is just hidden behind electrical components and is a bit difficult to get at but can be done. If you force it up with a Screwdriver you could break the arm rendering it useless

Your welcome.

A couple of other things. The following list is kit that YOU MUST HAVE in your car when driving on mainland europe just incase people are unsure.

A Full Valid Driving Licence

Valid Insurance

Proof of Ownership (or rental agreement if Hire Car)

1 x Hi - Visibility Vest

1 x 5Ltr Fuel Can (Full)

1 x Warning Triangle. The correct distance to place this out is 75 meters to the rear of the car and each side of the triangle must be about 30cm long again these are sold in halfords for about

On the French autoroutes you must have a hi-vis vest for each occupant of the car.

They must be accessible from inside the car as you must put it on BEFORE getting out.

Somewhere I have a link to the law.

They are available in the big supermarkets (e.g. Carrefour in Citie Europe) for a couple of euros.

For projector type headlights (Octavia II - when it comes)) I think I will continue to use the black tape as I do with the current Honda. If plod stops me he can see that they are corrected, they have not stopped me yet in 12k miles but was almost pulled over for a routine vehicle check in Roanne, he was pulling me in when he saw the reg.plate and waved me past.

Also carry photocopies of documents somewhere hidden in the car (e.g. under rear seat). My mother's handbag was stolen (complete with passports) in Marseilles and they had a problem proving to the consulate who they were, copies make it much easier.

Mater,

This is brilliant (the PDF file). Having got a quote of damned near 50 quid for the change from a Skoda dealer, I have been looking for alternatives... Someone somewhere on the web said that you can stick strips on a set of headlamp protectors, but I dont know how hot these Xenons run...

I was looking at the weekend at my lights and I noticed the hook, but I thought that perhaps the little black tab with the pimples on it my hold the answer but I'll be trying this all at the weekend.

Many many thanks!

If the xenons are the same as the mk1 octy, then yes they have a lever for adjusting the dipped beam pattern, but if the mk2's have a seperate high beam as the mk1, then beam converters still have to be fitted on the front of the headlamp.(to adapt the main beam).

hey first post, sorry to be negative. But i have been scratching my head, why would you want to adapt the main beam? Even if you adapted the main beam then drove with on coming traffic you would still dazzle them.

You would'nt dazzle them because you do not drive with on coming traffic with main beam on. Having adapted the lenses though the proper side of the road is illuminated, not the opposite carriageway. Oh and mister foriegn plod says you have to.

ok i have just returned from living in europe for nealry 3 years. I can categorically state you do not need to adapt the main beam. It is only the dipped beam.

Your main beam is designed to Illuminate both sides of the road as it should, iirc, point straight ahead. Even if you buy continental lights the main beam is still the same. The concern is that with flat beaming you loose some light and if you dont you dazzle other drivers.

sorry Kenny didn't get my point across that well but Mater has done it for me.

Can't argue with that, I was getting my info from car manual and my Haynes book of fables.
