Power steering problem

Featured Replies

Today at work their was a Fabia PD100 booked in with a power steering fault. The fault is when you 1st start it up there is no PAS until about 6 seconds later. This isnt normal because i used mine as like a dummy car.if you left the vehicle switched off for about 30mins it would take about 30secs for the PAS to work.I checked for any fault codes but their wasnt any plus engine management and airbag because the PAS control unit is all linked into the other two.Being electric steering i checked the alternator output and all connections and were all ok.I rang Simpsons Skoda where i got my car from and i told the cheif mechanic the problem and he said it would be the PAS control unit and the PAS pump.If anyone else knows what it could be or suggest the same fault please let me know because i need the help.

cheers

Phil

It could be a faulty pump.

I assume the fluid level is ok? May be worth checking to see if it has a latter type modified sensor on it as well.

I checked the fluid level and it was low but i topped it up.I asked about the sensor and it wouldnt do this sort of fault. Also if the sensor is faulty it would bring up a fault code i think or i might be wrong lol.

Phil

They don't alway bring up a fault as they don't always know they aren't working as they should.

Would be the first place I would look myself.

This happened with mine and was sorted by david ian skoda at Morecambe, is anything else happening to it, flickering headlights or probs with heating system they can be realted. luckily mine was warranty work and remember something to do with some seal in power steering system.

Phil,

I had the a problem with my pd100 before my vRS but it was winter. I know its silly to say the season but it was dark and the first thing I noticed was the lights flickering, then the power steering would not work for a few seconds and would run fine.

The next thing that happend was no power steering at all.

It was the angle sensor and was fixed for around

so fabtdi, do you think it will be the angle sensor then? The only time the power steering doesnt work is on start up.I have road tested it and the steering is fine but have noticed if you move the vehicle when the steering isnt working the steering wheel light flashes on and off when you turn the steering wheel but does not log any fault codes. As soon as the power steering works the light will not flash.

cheers

Phil

It does sound like a sensor to me. Its not recognising that the wheel is being turned so not giving assistance.

Yeah i think your right Lummox. The thing that is making me confused is that it only does it when you first start the vehicle.Just been thinking and it seems like the sensor is taking a long time to realise that the steering wheel is moving if you get what i mean.

Phil

Phil,

It certainly does sound like it is on the way out, just out of curiousity try it at night and see if the lights at the front of the car fluctuate when you have a steering problem.

I ordered the steering angle sensor today at work, there was a choice of two. one with the harness connected with the sensor which this Fabia had or one which had a three pin plug at the end of the sensor which my Fabia vRS has.My car is an 06 reg and the other fabia is an 03 reg estate. The part cost about

That sounds like what happened to me last night although the lights didn't flicker until after I had got back in the car 2 hours later and driven 2 miles with no sign of the steering light.
