Just checked the oil in the car and the dipstick reads minimum! No oil light yet though. Can anyone tell me what I should be topping it up with or should I just go to the dealer and get their stuff? How much would be needed roughly? Have heard most use CASTROL EDGE 5W-30 - is that the same stuff as the dealers?

Shell Helix goes in mine.

As long as it meets the specification shown in your manual you'll be fine. Given the sometimes poor availability of suitable oils it pays to keep a litre in the car I think.

I tried all sorts of places to get the correct oil (depending on the engine it depends exactly which VW spec oil it needs). In the end, I gave up, and went to a dealer, and bought a litre there.
