Heater blower makes dash vibrate

Featured Replies

As above really.....when on settings 3 and 4 (worse on 4) the fan makes a brrr noise through the dash. It's like the fan is resonating and vibrating the dash and worse when the engine is running. Do they all dio this?

I know I've got some leaves or something in there as I can hear the fan catching something that sounds quite thin every now and again like sticking a bit of straw in someones bicycle spokes but why would the fan make the dash vibrate with a brrr on speeds 3 and 4?

All ideas welcome.

Thanks,

Chris.

Outstanding. Thanks mate.

So it's the leaves that are making it vibrate? How odd.

The clatter of leaves comes and goes but the vibration seems to always be there now.

Next question, how to I get to the pollen filter? From my searches it appears to be under the passenger side of the dash in the 'heater box'. To be honest I've never seen anything under there when I've looked...only carpet and the bottom of the glovebox. Am I missing something? :D

The pollen filter lives on the right-hand side of the top of the passenger footwell, where the underside of the dash meets the console. The cover has sliders at both ends, which you move to the middle, and then pull the whole thing down. The filter then pulls down after it. Took me ages to realise, but there's a little lug on the filter frame that's designed to make sure you put it back the right way round. It can be a little fiddly (especially as you can't see what your doing!), but have a good feel around to check everything's as it should be before you try forcing bits back on. If everything's where it should be, the filter and cover should slip back into place dead easy!

HTH (again! ;):D )

Ahh yes, just found it. What a PITA to get the cover back on with the slidy bits.

I'm now soaking too, as is my passenger carpet. Damn weather.

I dropped the filter out and a load of leaves came with it. I then put my arm up into the hole to have a feel around but could find nothing obvious so I put it all back in.

I'll have to follow your guide I think and strip it all down. Find out what's fouling on the fan and making it sound like a duff exhaust. :D

Thanks again for the advice mate. Much appreciated. :D

LOL. Done. :D

Yay! Double figures! :woohoo:

Did you try removing the glovebox sticking it in re-circulate and putting your hand into the fan to remove leaves or just up the pollen filter location?

I did mine when i got it as the fan sounded like it had more power than the car

five mins good as new, ill have a look on sat if you dont get round to sorting it, if you want?

Sounds good to me mate. PM on it's way. ;)

I only removed the pollen filter as it was dark and chucking it down.

There's not a lot you can feel up there to be honest though.....removal of the glovebox is required me thinks to get at anything properly.

That's the thing. Leaves get trapped on the inside of the blower rotor, so you can't really get at them from the pollen filter side unless your hands are so thin and fingers so long, that you can reach the rotor and pull the leaves out one-by-one. For those amongst us who are not E.T. I reckon the glovebox-off approach is quicker and easier, as anything stuck there can be removed by the handful if necessary...

Good luck getting it done - I don't think you'll be disappointed! I'll see about posting a printer-friendly pdf version over the weekend, just to make things that little bit easier!

Gotcha. Will have a go at removing the glovebox tomorrow and doing it properly.

The pics on your guide are a bit fuzzy and dark by the way. Did you take them using a cameraphone?

Yup. But it's pretty dark down in the footwell anyway, so I don't reckon better pics would make much of a difference - you'll be using your hands to 'see' most of the time! But it isn't hard at all - ten minute job at most!

Ah ok. Not to worry. The sooner my fans stop sounding like a smallblock Chevy V8 the better. :)

ill sort it tomorrow for ya mate
