Fabia vRS rear brake pad upgrade

Featured Replies

Hi

From searching the other posts I have a good idea about what to upgrade front brakes to (eg 312mm TT, Mintex pads etc) but I was wondering:

1. following a remap to 170bhp (ish) is it also worth upgrading the rear discs/pads?

2. what discs/pads would be worthwhile?

I realise most of the braking effort is on the fronts but has anyone upgraded the rears? Could I for example use the discs/pads off a TT (like the front)?

Ta!

I had all four sets of brakes and pads done in one go recently, and although the performance is improved, I don't really know how much is down to the rears. Having said this, the old rear discs were in a much worse state than the fronts when I got rid, so I guess they're quite heavily used when braking in the Fabia.

FWIW, the rears on the Fabia vRS are the same as on non-Quattro TTs anyway...

Nope, spend the money on the fronts. The only reason you ever need to replace the rears is because of rust (Although I recently cracked a rear disc on a track day ;) ) as they only do 20-30% of the braking.

Not to my knowledge and I think there have been several threads about it and how it's not worth it. You should go with the 312's on the front though, these brakes are in a different legue to what is fitted as standard. I can also recommend the cross drilled discs and mintex extreme pads. The take plenty of punishment and give you a great performance.

Yeah, I'm going to upgrade the fronts to 312mm but if the rears stay the same won't that affect overall braking performance? Make it unbalanced or something?

Doubt it. As I said before, the rears on the Fabia vRS are the same as on non-Quattro TTs (which have 312s on the front of course...)

No, there is a proportional valve somewhere. All the weight shifts forward, the only draw back to fitting the bigger brakes is the nose dive under braking which can be quite a lot and if your not happy with that then you need to think about stiffer springs.

I have done 45k on a set of 312's with C/D zimmermans and they are fantastic, you don't need to touch the rears.

This is the only thing with the standard vRS brakes. Initial bite is fine but when the pressure's really on they feel so feeble it's unreal.

The rear dics wear out faster due to rust really. They hardly get used and so the surface just corrodes. I tend to pull on the handbrake every now and again to clean them off, mainly after I've washed it and they've furred up.

So you think for the rears maybe just put better pads on the OE discs? Mintex?

It depends how much cash you have. Upgrading them will see an improvement, but whether it's a value for money improvement is another matter. I personally wouldn't bother :D

:iagree:

Me too. Upgrade the fronts and if you don't like it nosediving, as Decron said slap on some uprated suspension components.

The rears don't do a lot on most cars as under braking the weight shifts to the front meaning it's these that have their work cut out in comparison.

I also wouldn't bother personally.

OK!

Cheers :-)

I'm in a minority then, I upgraded (initially) my rear pads and when the disks needed doing I put upgraded disks in too. Kept the balance better.
