Aftermarket Alloys - Insurance

Featured Replies

I'm considering changing the alloys on my Fabia vRS for a set of aftermarket ones. A mechanic friend said I wouldn't have to notify my insurance if the wheels cost less than the originals. This is likely to be the case, so can anyone offer any further advice?

Cheers,

Stu

I don't think it is the associated cost, rather than the desire and your car looks even more tempting to steal now factor.

It may not affect the overall price of your policy(It doesnt affect mine with swiftcover) but i would reccomend telling the insurance anyway, god forbid you had an accident and the assesor came out he could decide not to pay out if you have not declared them, and report you as driving without the correct insurance.

If the wheels aren't standard equipment then normally the rule of thumb is that you declare it.

My DL policy specificaly mentions modifications to engine. bodywork and wheels need to be declared.

So glad I have a car with decent standard alloys on now, I fell foul of this on the last car.

Some insurers want nothing extra for it, others want anything from

I once read that even wheels that were available as an option from the dealer needed to be declared. ie, the Fabia vRS has alloys as standard, but if you chose a car with a sports pack you'd need to declare the wheels in that.

Thanks all for your replies. You're pretty much all thinking along the same lines as I am - I don't want to risk invalidating my insurance. I'm sure the insurance companies hunt for an excuse not to pay out, and if they find anything they'll use it as an excuse. I'll definitely check before changing the alloys.
