I have just rung my local dealer to ask how much my 1st service (variable) will cost. He has quoted me

Not too sure about your price, but when I had my Fabias, the 10000 service was over

the first sevice is just an oil change had mine done the other day at 14000 miles cost about 90 to me as i am trade so i would emagine about 120 tops anymore and your being ripped off

Shizer! I'm not HP about that then! Do you think i can negotiate a lower price? He did say that was what Skoda listed as a price for a first service for a vRS. Can i take it to a non Skoda garage? Would they be able to reset variable service on dashboard etc?

I go to an ex Skoda dealer, now a specialist Skoda dealer - about half price for just as good a job, if not better. First annual fixed service [only did 8500 miles] was just over

I would expect for a 1st variable around

If you've got other Skoda dealers nearby check their prices. I've found considerable differences in quoted servicing costs. It was considerably cheaper to do a 60 mile round trip to another dealer than use the local one. You could also try bargaining with the local dealer saying "You must be joking, Bloggs Motors only quoted me

Probably got a lot to do with the service advisors not actually having a clue what to quote you.

just had my first variable at 17,000 and it came to

Not exactly the same but..

I have just been to collect my car that was being repaired by a local garage, and the bill is a lot more than I expected. The garage won't give me the car back unless I pay. What can I do?

The Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982 says that, if no price is agreed beforehand, you are only obliged to pay a 'reasonable' sum for the work You should ask the garage for an itemised bill to enable you to understand how the final total has been worked out.

You have a problem, though, in that the garage may exercise their right of 'lien' over the car. This effectively allows them to keep hold of the car until the money they are asking for is paid. You may have no choice but to pay, unless you an agree with the garage that they will let you take the car away if you pay them what the job is worth and put the balance into dispute. If you have to pay the full price make sure that you make this payment 'under protest'.

To gauge what would constitute a reasonable amount, get three estimates from other similar sized garages in the same area. If they charge substantially less, write to the garage explaining that you feel that you have been overcharged and ask them to refund the excessive amount by a set date - say fourteen dates following receipt of your letter. If this does not lead to a repayment you may have to issue a summons in the County Court for the difference.

But as he said he has been quoted to much then its down to him.

Doh very true, thought he had had it done.
