Can anyone help please? 2001 19TDI Elegance Fabia

My fabia has done 120000 miles and not missed a beat, but 3 weeks ago i was driving home and all the warning lights came on and i lost the power steering and the brakes.Managed to get home and charged the battery overnight, next morning all ok but it has now done the same thing again.Any ideas???

Battery needs replacing? Alternator not charging existing battery?

Chris

When you turn the ignition on do you get s battery symbol come up?

  • Author

Yes,battery light comes on.

It did it again on the way home tonight,no power steering or brakes.just checked the battery and is flat as a pancake.I've got one of those testers that go across the battery, have put on fully charged battery and all is ok,tester shows alternator ok too.But it seems as though the battery is not being charged.

Is there another way to test the alternator???

If you have no brakes then the engine has cut out, yes?

How old is the battery?

I mean no power assistance to the brakes, but the engine is still running. The battery was new yesterday and have charged the old one back up to .

I dont get why your wouldnt have power assistance to the brakes if the engine is running.

Would the alternator power the steering and the brakes when its running or is that a mechanical function( a belt or something). Its just weird!!!

LA

The brakes are assisted by a servo that uses vacuum produced by the vacuum pump which is driven from the engine.

What do you think i should do next??

Get it looked at, by a specialist or a dealer.
