Fan output goes down

Featured Replies

Has anyone experienced that climatronic fan in spite of its running conditions 2 or 3 bars on display gives no air in some conditions, especially when driving conditions are stable for some time. Installation regassed, new pollen filter new. After switching econ for a while a/c works again perfectly until next stable conditions. Never happens in city driving.

Any idea about the reason and fixing this?

The output direction (front vents, footwell, windscreen demister) can change automatically depending on the interior temperature and the climatronic settings.

Either that or your climatronic is dodgy

With regards to system regass, did the dealer do it? if so was it a direct result of a known leak or an attempt to trace a potential fault reported by you?

Did the dealer check for any fault codes when the system was examined?

Regassing was done during annual survey, at my claim a/c does not work properly they checked by VAG with no faults found, I suppose periodical evaporator freezing or difficulties with drainage (but no misting or water inside car). Dealer can't help in this case  What do you suggest ?

If the evaporator drain was blocked you would have a wet footwell by now, check that the condensation drips onto the floor under the car with the A/C running full for 5-10 munites.

Is the Climatronic set to AUTO when it misbehaves? is it the 2 zone climatronic system by the way?

If drain is blocked it must be only partly, still no water on footwell. Condensate drops on floor under the car anyway, in the event of this described malfunction (when air blow decreases) I stop somewhere on park place and check draining - there is a lot of water falling then like during ice melting (suggestion only?).

Climatronic is set to AUTO when it happens, after switching to ECON for a while it comes back to the function when set back to AUTO.

This is 2 zone climatonic in octavia II 1.9 tdi elegance - mid 2005, 50kkm.

Does the airflow output go down if the A/C is running but not in AUTO mode, for example set to front air vents and set to fan speed 2 or 3? and set to say 21 degrees (or equivalent farenheit)?

I'm trying to work out if it is a refrigeration problem or a controls/damper issue, the latter is a more common problem. I wouldn't expect the evaporator to freeze up.

So far I have experienced that in AUTO only, as I've written before when I set to Econ and back to Auto it works well again. I always drive with Auto. I will try to check as you suggest but when it is controls and/or dumper issue what is the way to fix?

First off, try driving with the ECON button light OFF and the AUTO button light OFF as well, set the temperature controls to say 21 degrees or whatever is suitable for you and set the air output to face, leave the recirculation turned off. Set the fan to level 2 or 3 and leave it like that for a time and see what happens.

I'll let you know results soonest.

Ok

Hi again,

As suggested I tried both ECON and AUTO lights off, temperature 20 degrees and one face vent opened, it took a little bit longer but again same appeared - no air blowing inside. I turned fan to max and after some time it started blowing inside. I also stopped and there came a lot of water under the car, for some time it was not dropping but falling with constant stream like from the tap. After that I turned engine again with a/c on blowing properly. What do you think about above?

From what you say it does sound like the evaporator is freezing up peroidically, it could be down to a damper misbehaving, the dealer will need to have a thorough look at the climatronic system to get to the bottom of it.

For an evaporator to freeze there must either be a lack of airflow across the coil or the gas charge is wrong, usually overcharging is the culprit but I would be inclined to insist the dealer checks out the dampers (or flaps) on the system.

I don't have access to any technical diagrams or data on the climatronic system so it will be down to the dealer to investigate it.

Can you visit another dealer to see if they approach it from a different angle perhaps?

I will try but nearby I have several dealers divided by 2 owners, mechanics are very smart but their knowledge is very poor. I always assist my car when anything is done in the workshop, car is still under 2 years guarantee. I wonder to go to another city for check up.

Might be worth a go. good luck

Hi, please find a reply from Skoda.cz upon my climatronic:

"It seems that there might be some kind of fault then. However, via email we are not able to make any conclusions or provide you with any solutions.

Please visit your Skoda dealer and let them check whatever is necessary to be checked. It would be a best option if you can drive to the service right at the moment when the A/C starts to malfunction so then they should be able to find out the fault by using the diagnostics. Also in case of possible evaporator freezing it should be easy to find out any possible problem as there is a sensor and the temperature there should be around 0 degrees and never less (never below zero).

The dealer can check all the data in the chart of measured values on the basis of the diagnostics output."

I aso found another symptoms of malfunction: when it happened again (stopping of air flow) I checked a/c installation and LP line from compressor to evaporator was completely frozen while HP line was dry but cold. So it must be sure that evaporator was frozen itself.

I have been at the dealer's today and following was found:

- temperature sensor after evaporator was showing 20 degrees at climatronic in AUTO mode while this temperature shall be between 2 and 10 deg.

Do you know the way of a.m. sensor replacement bacause I would like to avoid complete dashboard removal as dealer suggests during next "meeting"?
