Clicking noise, dodgy speedo, bad starting ...

Featured Replies

I posted on here a couple of weeks ago about an odd "clicking" sound from the dash when I was starting my Octy, and popular opinion was that the battery was u/s.

Well, the problem got worse, the car started misfiring occasionally, and the speedo took to flicking around randomly. Then it took to being harder & harder to start. Then, at 90 mph, the engine cut out completely for a second or so (the jerk that caused had to be felt to be believed, lucky it never broke something, my front teeth included). It also hunted on tickover, and ran like a sack of sh1te on over-run.

But there wasn't anything wrong with the battery, the dealer said.

So I took it back to Alex Lawrie, and told them the problem was worse. Theyhad another look found the cause ... by now a diagnostic fault was registered. A loose earth wire on the ECU was the culprit.

So if anyone else gets the same odd symptoms, this might be the cause. Just so you know.

Glad it is found! Hopefully your post will help with others diagnosing their problems.
