Changing front head light bulb

Featured Replies

I dont know where to start to do this but my front head light has blown and needs to get replaced - I can pop into Halfords but what should I get ad how hard is it to change

Thanks

Joey

If it is a dip beam bulb it is a H7 size bulb.

If it is a main beam bulbit is a H3 size bulb.

There is a guide on here about changing headlight bulbs. It is more fiddly rather than hard.

However, Halfords will fit the bulb for you for a small fee so you could let them do it?

I've managed mine with the battery in place so no need to remove it unless you've got freakishly large hands.

i just had a look at that page what does anybody make of those philips x - treme power H7 80% brighter than normal. they look nice

This sounds quite difficult I have to say - How long would you expect it to take a garage?

Might book it in there

depnding on the job/car/type of light it can depend it also of course depends on where you go. you could get someone useless or takes their time to hike up the labour cost. but depending on any complications id think 15 mins.

The trick with replacing the nearside bulbs on a Fabia is to disconnect the wires BEFORE you try and get the bulb out of the holder. This might sound obvious, but it took me a good ten minutes of struggling before I figured it out! As long as you remember to do that, it's pretty easy. The other thing to remember is to make sure the cover is re-fitted correctly, otherwise water will get in and cause the lens to fog up...

I quite like them ;)

If it's driver side bulb you're changing, you should have quite a bit of room to get the bulb out. If it's passenger side, I found removing the front battery cover gave me just enough room to remove the bulb. Unnecessarily fiddly though :thumbdwn:

Halfords charge

what are those xtreme bulbs like?

I'm after some bulbs which are just pure white... no hint of blue but no hint of yellow either.

The Extreme's are pure white, as are the Osram SIlverstars....

It might be worth taking it to a dealer - they've done it for me for free before. That said, changing the bulb is pretty easy - I'd give it a go. Just remember not to touch the glass part.

No offence intended but the job really is so simple you'd spend more time driving to the dealers, waiting for them and then driving home that you would if you just:

  • popped the bonnet
  • unclipped the cover behind each headlamp
  • pulled off the bulb wiring plug
  • removed the bulb
  • fitted new bulb
  • pushed on the wiring plug
  • refitted the cover.

Oh and close the bonnet.
