Cambelt change/cost

Featured Replies

Sorry, I realise there is another post about cam belt's at the moment but this is slightly different so I decided to post it on its own.

A combination of an up coming holiday (lots of miles), and horror stories of dead water pumps, I've decided to bite the bullet and have my cam belt/water pump done. Speaking to a guy in the know, he tells me that a common cause of cam belt failure on the 1.8t is a little hydraulic thing which leaks and the belt looses tension. I was just wondering if anyone knew what this component was, and how much it costs? He showed me one and it looked similar to a hydraulic strut used to hold the boot lid up, but much smaller (maybe 3-4 inches long) and with a more bulky body.

Sorry to sound so thick, I'm not really a cam belt kind of person

Also, do the metal water pumps vary? Are any better than others?

And finally, if I supply all the bits, how long is it likely to take a competent mechanic to fit?

Thanks :D

Yes in theory this should be changed (I usually advise it). They are a sealed hydraulic damper and have been known to leak. The damper actually holds the tension on the tensioner roller, if it leaks basically the belt goes loose.

Oh and about 3 hrs to fit.

Remember new mounting bolts.

Thanks Lummux, Don't suppose you have any idea on a price for this damper do you?

Also, what are the mounting bolts for?

The engine mount that needs to come off, should be replaced.

Not sure on the damper price tbh.
