Fabia CV Joints

Featured Replies

Hi,

Looking for some advice re: my 03 Fabia 1.9 Tdi Estate. Whilst driving home last night, suddenly lost all drive in all gears. Managed to coast to a halt and got towed home.

Clutch seems to be working fine (engages/disengages) and gears all select OK, (gears are spinning in the box OK) but no drive. In 1st, the car rocks very slightly at the biting point. I can only imagine that one of the inner CV joints has given out in a big way - there's a faint grinding noise coming from below the car when it's revved in gear, but no actual drive to the wheels.

There was no warning of any impending problems (car was going great) and no noise etc when the problem occured - just a lost of drive when changing up from 3rd to 4th. The car has done 48,000 and has a full dealer service history. It's not been driven hard, and I've owned it from 6 months.

Anyone had this problem before? Should a CV joint be going at this kind of mileage? Anyone have a clue about likely repair bill?

Cheers.

Were you using mega power when it happened? I snapped a driveshaft at Santa Pod (cv joint went spectacularly) but that was under extreme duress. I would imagine perhaps something has gone wrong with a selector, or something else internal.

Would be worth putting the front end on axle stands, and see what's happening at the gearbox end of the driveshafts. :) If you find you need a replacement box, I have a spare 5 speed from my car lying about (dirt cheap ;)).

i broke my drive shaft coming off some lights, my car had done 76k at this time in march....simular symptons to yours altho my car wouldnt even rock! :o

Hi,

Thanks for the replies. Wasn't using mega power - maybe 3,500rpm, dipped the clutch to change from 3rd to 4th, felt a faint 'pop', then nothing - except revs.

I'm pretty sure now that the clutch is OK, and the box is definatley spinning gears. Just can't get any drive to the wheels. It's usually pretty obvious when something major lets go, but not in this case. All very sedate!!

Never mind - it's booked in for a diagnostic. Just need to wait for the bad news.

Cheers folks.
