Noisy wipers - linkages?

Featured Replies

Noticed this evening on the way home that my wipers make a funny juddery knocking noise as they're running. I think it's something to do with the wiper linkages.

Is this a simple case of lubricating them or are they knackered? I'm not looking forward to yet another warranty claim and trip to the dealer after recent performances with my peeling rear window.

Cheers,

Chris.

You could try spraying vinegar on the top and underside of the blades 1st to soften them up and then see how you go on from there.

Quite often when the blades judder its down to the angle of attack of the blades on the screen. You can adjust this by a bit of gentle twisting of the wiper arms, to do this pull the arms away from the screen and then swivel the blades so they are at 90 degrees to the arms now twist the arms by holding the blades top and bottom and pulling the lower edge away from the screen and pushing the upper edge towards the screen. You only need to feel the resistance and then give it a twist more, dont over do it and brake the clips!

this has the effect of bringing the top edge of the blade closer to the screen.

You will be surprised how often this is all it needs.

If it dont work the problem is elsewhere.

Yup, guys you're right.....the blades are indeed juddering.

Oops. :o

Trouble was I could not see them doing it. They looked fine until the light began to fade and I could see things more clearly.

The top edge of the blade is indeed not quite touching the screen properly and so I will try suggestion 2 to see if it improves things.

Also, I'll try some vinegar on there too. Is it grease that causes the judder?

It sounds horrible....I've not heard juddering wipers this bad before.

Thanks to both of you chaps.

Yup re the grease - you can see the wipers 'catching' on it and then moving freely after the grease.

Vinegar is supposed to soften the wipers - and it will remove grease too.

Mine used to judder, squawk etc.

Few treatments of vinegar (I use a small spray bottle) and they are virtually silent at all times (worst times used to be on intermittent settings).
