1,2 12V or 1,4 tdi??

Featured Replies

Hello, i must say I'm very happy that i found this forum and I hope to get some advices from you..

I have a plan to buy eather 1,2 12V or more expensive 1,4 tdi, they should be oldest 6 years.

I need to drive 100 km every day to work and back, so I need reliable car but also good for outside of city.

I heard good things about this 2 models, and not so good about 1,4, especialy 1,4 101hk as i read it is very slow from start.

I think 1,4 tdi is better, because I'm worried that 1,2 12 V is not srong enough for 100km every day..

Thanks in advance!

Hi Zagor,

I've a 3 year old 1.4.Tdi. It's great. I drive 200km a day just going to work and back, so the car now has 128K km. Mixture of roads including motorways and tracks. No problems. Good economy and surprising performance. Slow to warm up - engine goes well from turn of key, but heater takes 10+ km to throw out any heat.

Can't comment on other models.

Thanks for answer viewer:) It look like it may just be what I need..How does it drive in city?

I didn't mention, I'm looking for st.car- but i ques it gives same performance, do you have 1.4 TDI st.car?

Please if anyone have other opinions of this 2 cars, please writte.. Also about Skoda Octavia 1,6 101 HK (no st.car)..

Oh yea, and what about 1,4 68 hp?

I heard that 1,4 68 hp is better than more expensive 1,4 101hp, is that true?

i have the 1.4 68bhp and would have said the 100bhp version was better in all honesty. but as to what you should go for, i would say the 1.4tdi, cracking engine

Ruku, do you know if it's true that 1.4 68 bhp is better for city driving than 100 bhb?

Also, it seems like I can't find any 1,4 TDI older that 2003. Did they start producing it that year?

Also there's not so many who sell them, i ques it also shows that people are happy with them..

yes the 1.4TDi wasnt made till 2003 , and I think that is when the 1.4 8v (68ps) was deleted in favour of the 1.2 12V engines (55 and 64ps). I have the 68ps engine in my car and I think it is fine , you are doing 60 miles a day so maybe you would be better off with a diesel.

Ps what about the 1.9 tdi 105 ps , that was availible from 2001 I think , good economy and power , maybe some of the older examples will be cheaper than a 2003 1.4 TDI?

Hmm.. Interesting idea, but the oldest 1,9 tdi i found was from 2003 and it coast 15-20 % more than 1,4 tdi... Maybe it's worth waiting until I found one couple of years older..

I can see that 1.9 SDI are cheap, but doing only 154 max speed, and it take 18,6 sec. 0-100 km:(

Maybe your market was different to the UK? I was looking at a 2001 Fabia Elegance 1.9TDi last year , with a view to purchase , but I decided to wait a few more years with my trusty 1.4 , untill I can afford a vRS!

I agree with Dmac1969 on the diesel. If you cant afford a 1.9tdi fabia why not try a seat ibiza 1.9tdi?

I dont know if this is right or not, but i believe that the 100hp 1.4 is actually more economical than the 68hp version?

Yea I would like 1.9tdi fabia, but there's not so many of them to buy here in Denmark, i found some but not older than 2003 so it's too expensive, but maybe i decide to wait little bit.. 2003 1.4 tdi i can almost afford, don't you think it's enough power for 60 m on day, on flat ways of Denmark? No mountains here..

1.4TDi.

Having driven a 1.2 12v and now running a 3 cyl engine almost half the size I can wholeheartedly state that the 1.2 is a shocking engine.

No power, no torque, crap fuel economy, crap noise. :thumbdwn:

The 80bhp 1.4 TDi is a cracker though :D

Driven both and they both have their merits I guess. The 1.2 is quiet whereas the 1.4 TDi sounds like a Transit van. A 3 cylinder diesel is not a pleasant sounding engine (a Roomster I drove had one in).

The 1.2 sounds kind of like a straight 6 when thrashed but has no power and does need to be thrashed.....a lot.

Personally, if I could live with the noise I'd get the 1.4 TDi.

If not, I'd get the 1.9 TDi.

In fact, sod all of the above and buy a vRS.

Please note>>>Guys Im not having personal go at you or being abusive, but have some really strong feelings about this, just say its 'cultural differences'

Really ? Ok everyones entitled to their views but to counter address the above the 1.2 12v is an excellent engine - economy brillant, does everything I want it to - takes me where I want to go, easy to service -and doesn,t cost a fortune to run, I dont want loads of power or torque.

Sorry - Mods feel free to delete my post if you think its going to cause trouble.

IMHO

The Good Lady has a 1.4TDI (75bhp) on a Furby Estate.

Absolutely brilliant engine, reguarly delivers 50+mpg, very nippy too.

Very comfortable at cruising speeds and absolutely brilliant handling.

Well recommended:thumbup:

The 1.2 12V is a lovely little engine; I'm a great fan of 2 and 3-cylinder engines, especially as they give more low to mid torque.

If you want to make progress though, you need to press the loud pedal quite a bit, and if you do, the fuel consumption drops into "Eeek" territory.

Even driving my TDi Octavia like I stole it, I can't get the consumption down to 1.2 12V Furby levels; indeed at an indicated 120, the Octavia's doing 8-10mpg more than the Furby is at 100.

Given the choice to chose, I'd always go diesel for both torque and consumption, so if the choice is 1.4Tdi or 1.2 12V, it would be the 1.4Tdi every time.

Do they do that? That might explain where my first post went...
