Ultra portable laptops....

Featured Replies

Owing to remarkable "skill" (cough cough cough) a family member has destroyed their laptop.

12.1". Shattered motherboard. Apparently "slid" from desk height to floor.....

So replacements.....

Criteria - has to be similar screen size - no 14"-17" monsters here.

C2D 1.8ghz or higher.

2GB Ram

120gb hd or more

N-spec wifi.

Gaming is NOT a consideration.

I've looked about a bit, and most of the ultra portable end of the market is saturated with over-priced 1.6 variants from tosh, Sony, HP or Crapard bell.

4 potential contenders:

Alienware Sentia M3450 - about

Piece of hardboard, rounded edges paint "chalk board" black. Add a pack of chalk and an admonishment to treat this one more carefully.

Coloured chalks if you want to upgrade the spec. :D

You will struggle, for the N-spec wifi as I dont think any laptops have that built in. G-spec will be no problem as if you are going C2D they should all have it. I guess you will be looking at some kind of Sony Vaio.

Check out PCworld.

Yes I know, but I picked up a quite high spec Toshiba for about

Joe, if you wanted something like a Vaio VGNSZ5MN (C2D 1.83, 2GB RAM, 120GB HDD, 13.3" 1280x800 res screen with nv geforce Go7400, DVD+- drive, web cam, 802.11g, bluetooth) let me know. I could possibly help you out on the price front (it would be similar to the Dell)

Get an etch-a-sketch! :D

May be of use - coming soon Aldi

And they're usually very keen on price

Medion MD 96290 15.4" Multimedia Notebook

ALDI UK: Offers, business hours, wine, realty, career

Ive found the medion gear to be packed full of features and very good at having plenty of gadgets. However the build quality is poor and customer service is non existant.

Currys.Digital (the highstreet store) have a very nice sony vaio 15.4" with nice spec for

but Ive bought a wii instead

One has to ask 'why'

i shudder at some of the stuff in pcworld and currys. it's usually a tad overpriced, spec for spec on my education contacts....

N spec wifi is in the apple and the dell.

Plus i've got n in the rest of the kit........

Xav - sony stuff is great for your office and business types, but given my experience of them in academic field use, it wouldn't last five minutes.

I have the Toshiba and think it is a very good machine, have a look.

However, the variants available now are slightly lower-spec'ced at the same price......

Novatech have always been brilliant with me - totally recommended.

If you give em a buzz they will build what you want to your spec I'm sure.

Using their online builder, looks to be the best spec so far and about
