Loss of power under acceleration

Featured Replies

My octy is losing power under hard acceleration post 5300-5400rpm. It just seems to hit a silent barrier & the tacho crawls slowly upto the redline. Idle is smooth & there is no loss of power till I hit approx 5300 rpm. Tried several things with little or no impact.

- Cleaned throttle body

- Changed the fuel filter

- Changed the spark plugs (two plugs showed some wear)

- Reset the ECU

The VAG-COM does not throw up any faults. I'm planning to check the fuel pump and the ignition coils but could really use some help if anyone has experienced similar issues.

Thanks!

Maf?

Would that not log in a fault in the VAG-COM? And would it play up only in high revs? Will check it tomorrow since you bring it up.

Thx

Gaurav

I'm not always sure it does. It's not happened to me (yet), but apparently you can just disconnect it and see if the engine runs any better. If so, it's the MAF!

mmm, thought the turbo would stop providing more force at 5500, so my guess is, that the 'crawling' is simply the changing from Turbo Charged to Naturally Aspirated.

if that makes sense

please ignore last comment, just been pushing harder and there is still pressure, up till 6000 rpm.

Still, read somwhere that there was not much sense in pushing harder than 5.5k, and if you have a look at a power output curve you will see it peaks, afterwhich you still have power but the increase is less significant.

Thank you all for your inputs. It turns out that my CAI was completely clogged with dust & was imploding (collapsing under extreme suction) as the rpm rose above 5000. Surprisingly, this happened in 20000kms versus the recommended 50000. Now that it's cleaned up, the difference was tremendous (also as I had added a miltek cat-back in the interim). My learning... a regular check on the dust buildup in your CAI is well worth the invested time.
