A Hi from a First Time Skoda Owner

Featured Replies

Hi to all. I bought my first skoda last Friday. It is a 2.0 lt Petrol, 1U22N4 Octaivia. 2000 model.

Unfortunately only after two days, the engine management light has come on :(

Is there a way I can find out whats wrong apart from nipping to my local dealer pls?

So far I have been reading few pages here, and found the forum to be pretty useful.

Thanks,

Bond..........Gamez Bond.

Hiya.

I think you'd be looking at using a fault code reader, or taking the car back to the dealer. In fact, after that timescale you'd be quite entitled to do so, and have the fault fixed at their cost as being pre-existing. (UK law).

Welcome to Briskoda.

VAG COM or a scanner will tell you the warning

Hello.

Shame you have a problem so soon :(

Hope you get it sorted quickly :)

Enjoy the site...there's fun and games round every corner ;)

many thanks for the advice to Hayley, mluton and KenONeill

Apologies for a late reply. I hadnt enabled the automatic instant email notifications as I was new here. i will enable them this time.

I borrowed a scanner and the fault code shown is p-0171 which means "System Too Lean on bank 1"

So far the information i have gathered is that it could be the MAF sensor or the O2 sensor.

Does any one know or have experienced this fault code and corrected it?

BTW, the car works perfectly fine. I bought it at a very good price from an auction, and so far absolutely spot on with the engine sounds, performance, fuel consumption etc. Does over 400 miles on a tank (mostly motorway / A-roads). Since it is from an auction, I might not be covered by the normal UK consumer laws to be able to take it back within 3 months etc.

Since I havent felt any problems with the car, the fault code confuses me a little. i have driven with the MAf sensor disconnected but the car still didnt show any issues when driving. I got a different fault code when disconnected though (No communications with the MAF sensor).

Does any one know how to rule out the MAF sensor, and/or the O2 sensor please?

I think the dealer may have known about this prior to selling you the car. Me thinks that they may have erased the memory to get rid of the light and then sold you the car (know how garages work Im afraid, worked for many of them) this is unfair at your expense and I think that you should take the car back for them to repair properly after only two days of ownership. Did you get any kind of warranty on it? Even if the answer is no I would be taking it back in and talking with the sales manager.

Unfortunately, it was apparently an auction car, which rather limits legal rights I think.

Yeh, as it was from an auction, I so far havent taken it back. Last night I drove it about 50 miles with the scanner attached and monitoring the O2 sensor readings. The O2 sensor before the catalyst (bank 1) was jumping all over the place, while the one after is pretty steady in its values.

Steady or varying throttle position? I'd expect some variation in pre-cat readings with varying throttle position (try reading the straight voltage with the engine hot and idling).

Ken,

Readings were jumpy with steady throttle. and jumping randomly (more than MAF and the 2nd O2 sensor (after the cat))

I havent so far checked the voltage, cos need to lift the car i think. but the scanner had built in tests for the o2 sensor, and it fails on (something like) "High Voltage Test" . passes on Low Voltage test....any ideas ??

Cheers.

I'm heading towards suspecting a bad pre-cat sensor but not certain.

Yeh I am thinking the same.

thanks.
