Wheel/Road/Tyre noise

Featured Replies

I have a 54 reg Octavia Elegance 1.9tdi (105hp) with DSG auto box which has only done 15K miles. I'm sure the Octavia wheel/road/tyre noise is higher than what one should expect from a late model, high specification car. It is fitted with the original Continental "Sportcontact 2" R16 205/55 tyres on the original alloy wheels.

It has been into the local Skoda garage who advise there is no wheel bearing noise so it must be the tyre noise being transmitted through the alloy wheels into the car and it may be associated with the DSG box as well. Three questions:

1) Is this car naturally noisy on the road?

2) If so then can anyone advise a good make and model of tyre that is a quiet runner for this car?

3) Does anyone know if this noise can be DSG auto box related?

Thanks

Just changed from Goodyear to Michelin Pilot Primacy (15" steel wheels) and they seem much quieter  I believe the Contis have a 'noisy' reputation...

fella i've conti eco-contact 3s on my octy, are rather noisy on certain road surfaces, that said i've also covered 15k and they are wearing well (should get 20k+ out of them at this rate).

Michelin Pilot Primacys are much quieter on my 1.9TDi Elegance than the original Bridgestone Turanzas which were especially bad on concrete roads.

mines a DSG and gets lots of road noise on certain surfaces - all figers seem to point at the Bridgestone Turazas. Due a chane shortky and will likely give Michelin pilots a go.

mine is an 06 1.9 dsg tyres when new were good year nct5 195/65 15

changed for a while to good year nct5 225/45 17 couldn't hear myself think in the car , changed back to the originals on non oem alloys and still feel the noise is deafening with the windows maybe quarter open and travelling 'bout 50ish.

someone said a while back that a fix was down to rear camber adjust dont know how true this was.. by the by mine has covered 56k km and still plenty of life in originals probably cause i broke their service and i forget at what kms

It is more a question of crap road surfaces more than your ties or suspension set up.

My Elegance is noisy until you come to the recently laid new surfaces when it becomes very, very quiet. The old road surfaces use a very course mix and rely on our vehicles to wear the surface smooth, which of course takes years and thus you have a rough noisy road surface. There is also a question of surface grip, which on newly laid roads has been found to become slippery. The Dutch proved the mix used on our roads, they used the same, was very suspect and no longer use it. MoT know of the problem, but the mix is cheaper than the good quiet smooth surface, so good old British logic prevails go for the cheapest and bugger the consequences.

I have Dunlops on my Elegance.

I read a couple of similar threads with interest when I was considering buying my vRS, leading me to go on an extended test drive over some known rough noisy roads.

I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised to find that the MY2008 Octy vRS on OEM contis is as quiet as any other firmly sprung car that I've driven, perhaps a little quieter (although I spend most of the time abusing my new iPOD connector LOUDLY).

Maybe the camber issue at the rear has been removed in manufactering? Worth a chat with the dealer...

We have Dunlop Soprt 07As on our L&K estate and can report exactly the same. The M25 southern sector has some particularly bad bits of ribbed concrete - the cheapest and nastiest road surface known to man.

So - which is the best tyre to suppress as much road noise as possible while giving decent braking and wet-weather performance (I'm not interested in cornering grip - my boy-racer days are well behing me)?

Suggestions?

Same problem with my Dunlop 205/55/16s and am planning a change - unsure between Goodyear and Michellin. Suggestions?

Michelin  that's what my wife runs on her Golf with those size tyres and they've very good - they are the 'Energy' version but the Pilot Primacy are even quieter and just as grippy ;)
