The problem I had turned out to be the power steering pump it had stopped functioning altogether so I replaced it with one from a breakers and that cured the problem.

If you have checked the feeds to the pump and battery connections and battery

condition (as stated the pump uses a lot of juice) and their ok I have no doubt your pump is faulty .

Accidentally stumbled on the thread here

First off, I'll go back to my VAG workshop and try to sell them back the steering angle sensor

So, next up I guess I'll have to check the battery and the feed to the pump as you say, though I don't really know how to do that or what voltage is right and wrong. Hopefully VAG will help me do a quick diagnose, considering they screwed up (my opinion) last time.

In the worst case scenario, if the pump is broken, I think the insurance company will take care of it.
