Featured Replies

hi guys, snow and again i get a bit of a problem getting into 5th from 4th, only happens sometimes but it p*sses the hell out of me! i got 2 either ram it in on take it back out and try again til it does go in. Cud this b a prob wit my gear box or am i just being lazy on the clutch? :D only happens from 4th-5th so i cant c that its being me.

Any theorys?

i very occasionally get a slight baulking/clunk as i select 5th gear , mine doesn't sound as bad as yours though and always selects , i just put it down to being a bit quick up with the clutch ,

maybe get the selector adjustment checked as a starting point to further investigation

how much did the new gear box set u back just out of interest?

it was done under warrenty (car was only 11 months old!) the gearbox itself didn't break (internals) but the gearbox jumped off the subframe, damaging both driveshafts too.... had a new subframe, new gearbox, new driveshafts....

car was much better after...better than it ever was from new, apparently the gearbox is fixed to the subframe with 4 bolts, there were only two in there when I limped it back to the garage, i get the feeling there were only ever two mounting bolts on... I always had more 'movement' through the drivetrain before the incident, and it was SO much tighter, and felt so much better after the work was done.....

Get the linkage adjustment and dogbone mount checked. If it was 3rd, I'd suspect it being the same problem as mine, where the gear lever could do with being a little further back or the throw shorter. Thinking about a short-throw conversion.

Wud that b covered under warrenty?

I'd think so. The other thing which might help (more so on higher mileage cars) would be to change the gearbox oil (75W90 EP full synthetic oil).

Hi John,

I have an Octavia VRS 11 - only done 8,000 miles. I have the same problem. Taken it back to the dealer on 3 occasions. They adjusted the selectors but don't seem to take the problem seriously cos when they test it, they can't find it. It isn't you and mine only does it rarely. I'm presently in negotiation with Skoda customer services who tell me that this is not a known problem. I think it will only get worse so want it sorting within warranty. If they don't, I'm thinking of contacting what car magazine for some sort of arbitration.

If you've raised it within warranty, you are covered, even if the dealer can't/won't find and/or fix it.

I had the same problem with 5th blocking, a gear oil change with a different oil (dealer did it) improved things greatly.

Thanks guys, car goes in again on Monday 15th Oct - will keep you posted - fingers crossed, will suggest the oil change.

I have a similar problem getting into s2nd gear on our Mk2 Golf GTI, but that'll be down to worn syncromesh or something... doubt it's the same on an Mk2 Octy but I thought I'd add my bit :)

EDIT: Just read the bit about oil changes, back to the Golf, changing the fluid for Redline MTL (or MTX, can't remember!) has been known to help, maybe something of similar grade would help?

Kept on at local Skoda dealer, they took the gearbox to bits, replaced 5th & 6th gear, sincro cone, something rings, clutch, flywheel. Would you believe it, it's better but does it now and again less frequently.

Blimey! i hope they dont replace my clutch, i paid alot of money for that!

Currently I've had the clutch and flywheel replaced and now they are looking at the slave cylinder.
