Turbo whistle

Featured Replies

I noticed my car makes a bit of a whistle/high pitched noise when driving along.

If I have the windows down and I presume the turbo comes online there is a slight noise, nothing major but I can here it when accelerating away. It doesn't immediately strike me as such a bad noise I need to rush off to my dealer but.....

Is this normal? Do all turbos make a bit of noise?

Yes, you can hear a whistle with most turbos, my wife was impressed when we got our Octavia VRS however I am deaf enough to be unable to hear it at all! What a bugger!

i can hear a whine on mine at around 2000 revs when the turbo kicks in. can hear it more now the faulty wheel bearing has been fixed

Phew, got a tad worried as it's my first diesel/turbo engine.

It's one less thing to go on the list for the dealer to look at soon!

As said, dont worry and enjoy the soundtrack :)

My old Focus and Clio turbo diesels used to whistle. My Skud TFSI whines, sounds more like a supercharger to me. Still nice though.

Wish the engine was a bit meatier sounding though.

I noticed with my previous TDI the whistle got more pronounced as the miles racked up.

Good or bad thing??

Good says I :D

Good until it goes pop!

My TDI vRS whooshes, hisses and woofs like crazy on part throttle

and roars on full throttle ...

... but; then I have got a K&N 57i induction kit fitted. :D

Not 100% off topic but...............

Although not a 170 (just a paltry 140!) I had to take my 57i off as the engine was generating what can only be described as a reverberating sound, not a million miles from a blowing exhaust, does yours do anything similar? In addition there was a pronounced stutter at about 2500 rpm on partial throttle, it hardly happens with the standard box.

The turbo does sound darned good with it on though :D

Mine whistles quite loudly, and if you have the windows down, "pooshes" when you lift off the throttle. :D

I've no particular 'unusual noises' but am getting a low speed/part throttle hesitation at times (at less than 2,000rpm/25mph) but not specifically at 2,500rpm, which I am putting down to a lack of 'cold air feed' due to a build up of hot air under the bonnet with lack of forward motion to give any form of ram effect to produce cold air.

The OEM airbox does have the benefit of a pure cold air feed with the intake designed to suck in only ambient air from just behind the radiator grill. I am working on some heatshielding and some way to direct cold air to the filter to reduce the amount of warm air sucked in by the filter.

Thanks for that, it's not just me then, the hesitation is at low speeds as well.

At low speeds you have the double whammy of no intercooling and this hot air intake to the engine. That's obviosuly going to upset the car somewhat.

Apologies for the thread hijack again, i'll be quiet now............:D
