Can someone answer my question please, been thinking about it today.

"I did a scan yesterday and 1 fault was shown, why doesn't this put the engine management light on ?"

"Is it only more than 1 error that it will show the engine management light or are some errors classed as minor and some as major ?"

If i never had a VAG COM then i would never have known of the error.

Fault codes can but must not flag the MIL, depending on the fault it often needs to occur at least twice to flag the MIL.
