PC techie help needed URGENT.

Featured Replies

My dad has a quad core pc, which he bought at the same time as mine but it has literally stopped working and I cant get anything out of it.

I think he was using the net at the time, and managed to press the half moon sleep button and now the computer just doesnt do a thing. When you press the power button, all the fans and drives come on, but thats it. No post, no beep codes, no picture, nothing.

Things I have tried so far.

Removed each memory chip in turn, and tested the pc in between,

Disconnected the DVD Recorder (both power and data),

Disconnected the Hard Drive,

Swapped the PSU to a known good one,

Tried a different graphics card,

Removed all cards except the graphics card.

Reset bios using the motherboard jumper.

Despite all this, it still wont post. It sounds like either the CPU or motherboard itself has failed, but why would pressing the sleep button cause that.

Another observation, the CPU fan speed is controlled by the bios and speeds up/slows down as required by the CPU temp. For some reason at the moment as soon as you power on it comes on full speed instead of slow like mine.

Any other suggestions, the motherboard is a Foxconn G9657MA-8KS2H if thats any help.

Sounds like mobo to me. I would have suggested resetting the BIOS if you hadn't already done it. Only way you'll prove the CPU is to try it in another machine.

Sounds like power management has got itself confused, for whatever reason!

As above, reset BIOS (possibly by a jumper on the mobo). If this isn't possible, disconnect all power from the PSU and take the mobo button battery out for a few hours. Then start afresh.

Good luck :)

I dont really want to try the CPU in this PC, he has only had this pc for 4 days and for some reason seems very negative about taking it back to the shop for repair/replacement.

Take it back to the shop, his porn collection can't be that big after only four days!

Yep, thats what he is now going to do. I have persuaded him its the only course of action now.

We did try leaving the battery off for an hour and it made no difference.

Result, returned pc to shop and after they tested it, they swapped it for another new one.
