Ive been eyeing one of these up possibly for an xmas pressie for my mk1 octy vrs.

does anyone have one fitted to their car. if so do you have piccies etc

TOUCH SCREEN DOUBLE DIN DVD/CD/FM/MP4/DIVX/MP3/USB/TV 7 - eBay DVD Players Monitors, In-Car Entertainment GPS, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 15-Oct-07 12:10:32 BST)

Its your call, but what are you expecting for £150?

Personally i wouldn't buy off him as his feedback doesn't inspire me at all.

Don't forget with a non OEM unit you will loose steering wheel controls (if fitted) and CD multi changer.

these say that you can hook up a multi changer to them. i dont have steering controls. looks like the cops didnt go with that option :-( who had it before me.

im mainly after a player that i can watch movies, play cds and hook an amp and sub onto.

But what brand multichanger, the factory one aint going to work.

These budget systems are just that, and the sound quality is very poor even compared to a factory system.

why wont the factory multichanger work with it?

its only an idea nothing deffinate but seems like loads of ppl are buying them

bumpage for any info on why the stock multichanger wont work with an aftermarket HU?

The stock cd changer will only work with a VAG head unit. Just like a sony changer will only work with a sony headunit, an alpine changer will only work with an alpine head unit.

Sure there are exceptions, but the OEM one certainly isnt. :)

multi changers are dead anyway, you can get nearly 10 albums on an mp3 cd and most HUs can read them.

bite the bullet and buy a proper one mate, i have a kenwood double din DVD headunit and i bought most of the options too so i have fully integrated sat-nav and a bluetooth adapter for the stereo from the touch screen i control the sat-nav(which can also run in the back ground and direct me though a specific speaker whilst everyone else watches a filum) and/or watch the map and i can access my phone through the touch screen including speed dials

not cheap admitidly but just the headunit will be around £450 new i think and much much better than one of these.

forgot about eh multichanger, you can adapters to use certain aftermarket multichangers on oem headunits but nothing at all the other way. now if you knew the pin arrangement and were confident and had a standard one to chop up and an aftermarket one to chop up you may be able to get something working.

that picture looks very dodgy and photoshopped. as said spend the money and get one with a known badge on it.

those double din dvd players that are cheap on ebay have very very poor interfaces, they are literally a blue screen with white text on, no fancy graphical interface like pioneer/kenwood/jvc/etc etc.

it looks just like that but i think its got a different model number. good units.

Dodgy and photoshopped? the cheek. Its 100% inmy car:thumbup:, just a poor picture:thumbdwn:

Most of these cheap players on ebay are OEM units - they are basically bare hardware with most basic blue screen OSD, like old VCR units. So as general rule - beware of any products which don't have screenshots of the real screen and menus - they are guaranteed to be very ugly. Given proper SDK you could potentially do marvels, at the end of the day, these boxes DO become your Ripspeeds, JVCs and Tevions. However, any development kit means few thousand units on order, not a one off player.

Some of them units are modular, manufacturer can add extra options at will - bluetooth, SD reader etc, but regardless of the actual spec most carry the same basic set of menu options, which retailer would be expected to remove in their version of GUI. What it means is that most will have NAVI buttons on screen even though they don't have proper NAVI port at the back, and so on so forth.

There is another story to NAVI. There are few units in China which have proper ports and proper Samsung PocketPC boxes to conenct to them, so you can install any PPC sat nav program and control it via touchscreen. Sounds great. However. As with every idea many manufacturers jumped on it and released cheap PPC boxes (usually auctioned with Route66 software preinstalled) which connect to "video in" port but have no proper control for X-Y axis which would allow head unit's touchscreen to interact with what's in the box. Instead those units use remote control to input any text or move screen around, which is completely silly.

Almost none of the units in this price range have dedicated accelerated graphics, it's usually just basic TV output to the cheapest LCD, so the screen looks kind of like RGB signal.

Few examples of what I mean:

Basic OEM unit without proper OSD:

OEM unit with pre installed graphical interface:

Some time before new year I will try and post full review and pics of one of the far eastern units (although from somewhat higher shelf as it were) which someone I know imported directly as a potential business idea.

can't agree with you there, they are not the same units.

i know people that have bought these cheap ebay pieces of tat and they are absolutely useless in every way. they feel cheap, they look cheap, they sound woeful and they aren't very reliable.

i used to have a JVC-avx1 and it worked very well indeed, a kid i know saw it, loved so bought a cheap copy off ebay that broke down after maybe a week or two and never looked or worked anything like as good.

buy decent brand name stuff and get what you pay for, my kenwood touch screen has never faultered in anyway shape or form and the sat nav is brilliant.

Not the same units as what? Not sure I understood..

you said these cheap ebay ones are the same as the jvc's etc that they are the same units with a lesser GUI and less add-ons, that is what i disagree with :)

sorry nate i meant the ebay ad's pictures.

If that's how it came across I apologize. What I meant was - the quality of OEM units vary and some of these boxes are often picked and customized by "no thrills" budget brands - ripspeed, JVC etc. Many of the cheap units certainly have potential, given proper spec, development and customization. But the tools to do so would always be out of reach of typical ebay user.

sorry nate i meant the ebay ad's pictures.

ah right my bad. sorry dude

ahhh, gotcha!

wow sorry to start a war guys but thnks for your replies. i havent bought a head unit yet and will probs get one in the new year sales. i agree the ebay one were probs cheap pieces of c##p

Been reading this thread after looking at these ebay units with some temptation.

The consensus seems to be to leave them and save up for a Branded product??

Out of interest though did anyone manage to look at a few of these units and see if they are any use at all??

Cheers
