Phew, sounds as though I'm fortunate not to have had an expensive failure. I only took mine in for timing belt replacement last month at 61K, but the car is over six years old!

What's regarded as a fair price for the job (inc parts, labour and VAT)? Mine's due for its 3rd belt next spring !

When our company VW LT35 TDI stripped its belt earlier this summer (destroying the engine) at 62k miles I did look into getting mine changed early and was getting quotes of £320 to £350. Seemed a bit steep to me, but is this about the going rate? Those prices included the 'kit' which I assume includes the tensioner.

I was quoted £450 - £600 to have my 60k mile service including cambelt. Ironically, the cheapest quote was from a main dealer and the most expensive from an independent specialist. I'm not sure if the water pump was replaced on mine, but it's definitely worth having it replaced at the same time with one which has a metal impeller to safeguard against the water pump letting go.

Mine cost me the amount in parts to buy them. I was already paying Allard to strip down my head to replace the camshaft so it seemed silly to not do the belt and waterpump whilst everything was in bits. Doing the belt at 40k means I don't need to think about doing the belt until I get close to 100k miles (on this engine, not in total)

£350 would be a reasonable cambelt change service in my opinion.
