Confused about xenons

Featured Replies

I have xenon dipped beam on my 01 Octy - however they were focused way too low (as were the standard main beam)

My local (non-Skoda) garage re-focused them using the adjusters at the headlights themselves.

On the way home my lights were perfect - however the next morning the dipped beam were as bad as ever though main beam was perfect.

What happened . Do I need to get a VAG-COM set-up to "programme" the xenons?

I intend to upgrade my main-beam bulbs (headlight out job because of xenons) - will this effect the focus on the lights and if so I presume I should fit the new bulbs and then get all lights re-focused (and VAG-COM'd if needs be)

I'm not sure why the full beam are still ok, but yes, once they are set up you need to use vag com (or the dealers computer) to set the base setting.

Unplugging them shouldn't affect the beam, just make sure you disconnect the battery first.

Thanks for that Phil.

When I turn the lights on the Xenons still lift - just not as much as they should do I think.

Maybe the main-beam are not as high as they should be but they were probably so far out before being re-focused that anything is better.

I'll sort out the new main-beam bulbs first and then get my local dealer to focus everything. Or is it worth getting a VAG-COM cable etc for myself? Would I really get much use out of it?

VAG COM is an excellent piece of equipment, mine has paid for itself in just 6 months or so. I suppose it just depends how much you think you will use it. I invested in the hex-can lead because I plan to stay with Skoda (or VAG) for the foreseable future, plus my parents have an Audi so it really saves us quite a lot (conbined with the knowledge on here!)

Expect to pay around £50 to have your xenons set up by Skoda.

£50 - which here in the Rip-Off-Republic probably equates to €100. Just to have my lights focused.

VAG-COM here I come

AIUI the "self-levelling" facility on PD lights works by re-focussing the units every time they're turned on. From what you say the local garage re-aimed them, so I'm not surprised the dip finished low after the car had stood overnight. IMO the issue is with the original setup of the units.
