n00b with a couple of questions (Don't we all)

Featured Replies

Hey there guys, proud to be a member of this fine forum! I've been skim reading loadsa threads and all of a sudden two hours had passed!!

I don't actually have a Brisk Skoda yet... or any Skoda for that matter. Atm, I'm in an S-Reg 306 DTurbo-S. Being that I do 17k miles a year and with the cheapest fuel I can find within a hundred miles being 101.9!! I'm always gonna be driving a diesel.

A couple of years ago I had all the old anti-diesel thoughts as every1 else but I've been won over by my 306, which has had the Derv Doctor treatment to the tune of a Stage 1 Engine Enhancement, and still getting 40mpg...

I've run up more than a couple of miles on the 306, and it's getting a bit longin the tooth so I'm really looking to upgrade! I've found a Black Skoda VRS on a 54 Plate with 54k miles on the clock (A lot for a 3 year old car I must admit, but the guy DID run back and forth to Peterborough everyday - That's a way from here).

Anyhoo, I was wondering if anyone could enlighten me on the general things to look for on these motors? I've had a test drive and everything seems sound, but what does concern me is the dealer's claim of 170bhp. These are 130bhp standard right?

Is it more prone to breakdown or mechanical problems at the result of this (I presume...) remap?

Is there anything I should always check for? (EG: the Ford red key, or 306's air conditioning). Also, the dealer is still "working out a price", so what should I be paying? I've tried guides but they say anything between £6,640 and £8,305 for it. It's a 2004 54 plate, with 54k miles in black... lowered on OZ 16" wheels with what I presume is a remap...

Anyway I've rambled...

Cheers in advance.

~Tom

Hello and welcome to briskoda:thumbup:

Cant help with your queries im afraid. I drive a proper Petrol vRS:P but there are a few Heathens on here who have succumbed to the Dark side of the DERV :rofl:and im sure one will be along soon to help you out:thumbup:

Carl:thumbup:

I asusme you are meaning a Fabia vRS then.

If it is mapped then 170hp would be a reasonable figure. 130hp is standard.

Yeah, it's a Fabia! Sorry!

It all depends on the previous driver; if she/he ragged it constantly, then maybe. If he/she drove sensibly like me  then probably not.

Yeah cambelt and water pump are due to be changed at 60k miles or the car's 4th birthday, whichever comes first, check that rear washer works, check that brake-light switch has been changed

Also, the dealer is still "working out a price", so what should I be paying? I've tried guides but they say anything between £6,640 and £8,305 for it. It's a 2004 54 plate, with 54k miles in black... lowered on OZ 16" wheels with what I presume is a remap...

Presumably because he's taking the Pug in PX  At the higher end of the prices you quote I'd expect to get a lot of factory fitted extras (leather, satnav, cd autochanger, parking sensors, etc.)

Best of luck with the trading and welcome again.

Welcome :)

Hello and welcome.

Hiya.

I can see a heruge "grin factor" being added to your motoring in the near future. Even stepping from the XUDT19 to a mere TDi110 added a big grin, and 10mpg better typical fuel consumption.

Big thanks mathepac! It's nearing that 60k water pump and cambelt change so I'll make sure that's been done before purchase.

I didn't really pay much attention to the interior/extras, I was busy being blown away by the performance...

The car has to pass it's most important test on thursays... I'm taking the mrs 2 see it, so I'll get an extensive lits of extras then and there.

Yeah, it seems as though it'll bea big improvement over the XUDT, but it's been a good engine... anyone after a fast diesel on a tight budget couldn't do any better.
