How do you clean the MAF

Featured Replies

How do you clean the MAF...well basically just that, where is it how do you take it off and most important how do you clean it and what with...........my Superb is still playing silly wotsits and on one hill near us you accerlarate up it from a 30 mph at the bottom as I get to just about 60 the turbo cuts out and it go's into limp mode (i.e. a 1.9 sdi) turn off the ingnition and restart and it is fine .....I have cleaned out the K&N air filter in case that was restricting the airflow but that didn't do it ....so now I am looking for ideas ...anyone have or had a similar problem.......want to try the MAF to see if thats it but all ideas are welcome

That is unlikey to be a MAF, more likely sticky VNT vanes on the turbo. It sounds like it is overboosting and being shut down by the ECU.

Unplug the MAF plug. If the performance is then bad all the time, it's likely your MAF is OK. You should get the car connected to VAG-COM too.

It's next to the air filter in the trunking/pipe from the air filter to the engine.

If you are in warrenty get up the dealers for it, as that sounds like the turbo not the MAF.

If you are out of warrenty and selling it you could always try 10k boost derv. It works reasonably well I've heard as a short term remove enough gunk to make it work again trick. Obviously after that you would want to be booting it to free the VNT mechanism up.

I don't think cleaning MAF's is ever reliable and for the price of a new one not worth the hassle IMHO. That said I'd agree that your problem isn't the MAF Rob.

IIRC yours isn't a high miler so vanes although entirely possible wouldn't be my first choice. I'd initially suspect a vacuum leak or solenoid failure.

Try moving the vanes by hand - With the engine off reach down to the turbo and operate the actuator arm to move the vanes, see if they fill stiff or stick in one position.

That's a good idea. It may be easier from below....

I'd agree. One for my A3 was about £80 for genuine, brand new Bosch. It transformed the car- it had done 80K miles, which seems about the going rate.

Oh to clean it, just get a suitable bag and put some IPA in it along with the MAF.

Shake it about a bit and then leavei ti to soak for a minute or so. Shake it around some more then take the MAF out and find a way of safely disposing of the IPA. (It will evaporate ;) )

Put the MAF back in and you might get an improvement. I've done this a few times on the old car and while I think it works pretty well, it really is a short term solution as one the crud has got onto the platinum wire it is quite hard to get off.

IIRC £65 exchange for a new genuine part :)

This isn't a MAF problem for sure Rob.

Might be worthwhile getting a diagnostics done Rob... I'm in the "area" next Friday if thats any good ;)

Sounds to me like an overboost fault maybe, is the car tuned?

is the car tuned?

Depends who's asking !!! :P

An entirely standard car I would imagine but it does have the performance of a Dragon!! ;)

Hmm now I had a focus 1.8 tdci that had the performance of a Van Aken (whatever creature that may be) ;)

One day the engine management light came on and me found said creature was breathing a bit too hard. Once the creature was adjusted downwards things were all happy again ;)
