Driving the car today and the dpf light came on for about 30 seconds , put my foot down a bit and it went off . . . what should i do

Rang the dealer he said for the light to come on it may have a blockage somewhere , when i told himm it went off when i put my foot down he said dont worry about it as long as it stays off , he also mentioned that if it keeps happening it will go into limp mode ??? whats that ?

getting the hand book out to have a look at :o

Don't worry about it unless it comes up again.

Limp mode is a backup function when the engine management detects a problem and allows you to 'limp' home on reduced engine power. It's usually accompanied by the orange engine management light on the dash and a very sluggish engine.

Mine has started doing this now. A day spend pootling around and the light came on. Even when I spent 20 minutes on a motorway it still stayed on. So I booked it into my local dealer this morning to have the fault code looked at.

Typically when I went to drive it to the dealer this morning the light didn't come on - I still took it to be looked at but surprise surprise the dealer could find nothing wrong with it.

All the dealer could say was bring it back if it happens again. So I'm in the same position - I have to wait for it to go wrong.

I know there's been lots of talk about DPF problems on VRS TDIs on here. Not sure what the summary is though. Is there anything we can do proactively to prevent it happening at the most inconvenient time?

My understanding is that the ECU monitors the pressure drop across the DPF, and if it gets too high does all sorts of jolly clever things to try and cook off the soot (like making the idle lumpy etc.) However it seems that if you're doing things like short runs at low speeds, these things aren't enough and the DPF gets more and more blocked until eventually the ECU logs a fault and puts you into limp mode, which reduces engine performance and thus DPM production...

All part of the regeneration cycle - AFAIK.

A dose of full throttle a day; keeps the DPF at bay. ;)
