Help, Handbrake strangeness!

Featured Replies

Hi.

I just bought a leather handbrake cover for my 2001 Elegance of eBay. Pt Number FFA 400 010.

It doesn't fit! It goes on ok'ish and even clips into place like the original. the button functions and everything.. except...

it's too straight? when the brake is off the tail end of it sits above the rear of the center console.. not concealed under it.. and you can't actually engage the handbrake due to it fouling the rear of the center console as you lift the lever.

looking down the barrel it makes the metal lever sit lower down in the cover and then has this plastic spine that means it won't sit down any further onto the metal lever.

Does anyone know anything about this? Did skoda chnage the metal handbrake lever at any point during the furbys production? is it a different lever from drums to discs?

I'm a bit confused by it all.. could it be an Octavia's cover? would they even go on and operate?

thanks for anything.

Rob.

From what I can gather, there are variations in the lever depending on disc/drum fittment but the covers/boots seem to vary only with interior colour. So in theory if your cover id definitely for a Fabia it should fit!

I believe that there are two handbrake levers. An old type with a black plastic button and a newer straighter lever with a crome button. I believe Lummox posted something about this when someone else raised the same issue. I have fitted two of the ebay covers to mine and SWMBO's cars with varying degrees of success.

They don't fit. I actually tore throught the leather in my desperate attempts to fit it to mine but it doesn't work. If your handbrake has a bend in it and a black button, you've no chance. If it is straight with a chrome button, it'll fit straight on.

Hmmm..

So there was different handbrake levers after all? Well at least that explains it.

Now, where do I go from here? I asked after a refund and got "I've sold 130 of these and never had one back".. but that's ok cuz it was only £7.50 and to be honest.. I reckon I can fit it one way or another seeing as the actually mechanical side of it functions.. it's just the physicality of the incorrect motion that's causing issues.

I have an elegance with a silver button.. but a bent lever.. is this normal? it's 2001.

Ok, another question,

Are handbrake levers interchangeable.. i.e. can i get the right lever and bolt it in under my center console? (can I even switch the release buttons over?)

This way is long winded though.. I might just try to modify the guide rails / spine inside the cover so it sits lower because I think if it were just an inch lower it's all be fine and it's the spine down the top of the inside that make it sit so proud.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

Oooo..

one more idea... cut them both in half and create a leather handle on the plastic body?

the handle part work... it;s about half way down where it all goes fun bags up..

When I did SWMBOs I fitted a block of stiff foam about 50 mm square in the area at the front of the cover. This rests on the metal of the lever and forces the spine to bend to the correct shape. This has been fairly successfull, more so that my later attempt on my car where I did actaully remove the spine inside to allow the cover to bend more easily to shape.

I have another one to do for my Mother and I think I will go for my original method if I can find another foam block the correct size.

Sort of right, one type has a kink in it, the other is straight. Mine is straight but has no chrome on it.

reflex88, if you cant get it to fit and want rid of it, ill take it off your hands. My email is mike dot pembo at gmail dot com

swap the dots for . and the at with @ ;)

Dont PM me though because my box is full and I havnt had the time to empty it.

I 've bought a leather handbrake cover for my bended lever. The problem is that I just can't release the old one. I searched through the Forum and as it is stated there is a clip to be pushed in front of the handbrake. On the under side of the old handbrake cover there is a slit. I tried to insert a screwdriver but nothing hapened. Has anyone has photos of the removal procedure of the stock handbrake cover? Please give me an idiot's guide, as I'm afraid that I'll destroy the clip in my desperate efforts.
