"auto lock"

Featured Replies

On two seperate occasions when SWMBO has been using the car, it has locked itself. Once with the keys and our little boy inside(necessitating a very rapid drive from me to Basingstoke from Southampton) the second time the rear door was still open.

Dealers have said it is basically impossible.

Has anyone had this problem?

Depends on what you mean by lock.

On the Fabia vRS, passenger door open, driver's shut, press the 'knob' on the top of the passenger's door, doors lock. Shut passenger door, car locked & b*ggered if keys left inside!

But in this case if someone's inside the inside door release handles when pulled will firstly disengage the lock. Pull again to open the door. So here the deadlocks haven't engaged.

If the car is locked with the remote fob (or from the driver's side keylock) then the internal release handles will not open the door as the deadlocks will engage.

If the car is locked, remote boot release used, all doors unlock. Boot opened then door opened, youngster climbs in, door then boot shut, all doors will lock with deadlocks engaged....

I haven't had any trouble with either the vRS or my old Tdi Fabia other than when any Radio Amateurs are transmitting on 70cms waveband when the keyfob will not work (it's swamped by their tranmissions).

Basically what happened the first time, SWMBO was putting our son (he was less than a year at the time) into his childseat in the rear. While doing so, she put the keys on the parcel shelf inside the car. She shut the door forgetting she had left the keys on the shelf. The car then locked itself (there is no way she could have done it with the keys inside the car, and no way our little boy inside the car could have reached the keyfob) with our son and the only set of keys my wife has inside the car.

The second time was the same (not at the same location) but luckily SWMBO had left her drivers door open when the car locked.

Sounds like a very dodgy convenience unit to me. Have it checked at the dealer.

Think you can fix it with VAG-COM (although I haven't got my cable working yet!) as the car will lock itself after so many seconds (30?) if the driver's door hasn't been opened after the car is unlocked..... I thought it was kind of cool, but now have my doubts, especially if I managed to leave my keys in there! :)

Sure one of the VAG-COM experts - Jon or Jeff - should be able to tell you....

Is it only if you open the drivers door? I thought it was any door. This could be worth investigating further.

Q

What's a "convenience unit"?

(Should that read inconvenience unit?)

I'd have to consult my trusty handbook, or go and experiment with the doors in the company car park - either way I'm going to get soaked so I'll try it later if no-one else knows ;):D

Chris

AFAIK it's any door, not just the driver door....

Thanks Chris. Failing that, I could get off me fat Ar5e and have a look when I get home tonight. :D

If it is any door though, still doesn't solve my problem.

The trouble is, it's so intermittent (only twice in two years, both when SWMBO has been using it. UMM  ) I'm not sure if a dealer could do anything.

It is an erratic convenience unit, as I have had it happen a few times, along with when only having the boot open and then shutting it it did not lock. It is not something that can really be done with VAGCOM that I know of apart from checking for any faults. If Jon knows any more than me, I am sure he will post here sooner or later.

When you unlock all the doors with the fob, as soon as a door opens the car should stay unlocked. When you unlock all the car in the traditional way and open any door other than the drivers door, the alarm goes off (the alarm will also go off this way if you open the drivers door and do not start the engine within 30 seconds).

What part of this sceptered isle are you Rob?

Hi Jeff

I live in South Hampshire

Do you think a dealer would replace the unit under warranty given it is so intermittent?

Since the fault has been a major safety issue for you twice already, I would insist on the fault being fixed - even if it means all the components in the locking system being changed. JMTPW.
