Inconsistent MPG

Featured Replies

Hi,

I dont know why, but im getting inconsistant mpg, I spend £30 a week on fuel and that normally does 170 miles if im lucky. My drive to work is approx 6 miles of town driving, although 2 of those are a long straight road at 40mph... anyway, i keep an eye on my trip computer and im averaging 30mpg on the drive to work, and 27mpg on the drive home....if its quiet i can get 35mpg, but thats not very often...... but that seems fairly consistent, however the mileage varies from 130 - 200miles for £30 of fuel? that doesnt add up, traffic is usually always the same volume, and my mpg to and from work generally stays between 27 and 30, so why is the overall mileage so different? plus the car feels really nice to drive sometimes, and other times completely gutless.

I cleaned the MAF a few months ago, and replaced an air pipe that had a split, there are no other splits anywhere, plus its recently had a service and general check over?? so im lost. Sometimes I fuel at Shell but generally always at Tesco, but always super unleaded?

Any idea guys?

Cheers

temperature differences, tyre pressures, hills etc all play a part.

if its warmer, it'll use less fuel than if its cold.

nah im talking about this time of the year, last 4 weeks, same trip everyday so hills etc shouldnt matter, temp is basically the same, a few degrees change thats all. Tires are aways at 34 front and rear.

Is it due a service?

i noticed my doing average 26 mpg last night which raised my eyebrow but the car is due for service so don't know it any different

It looks like you've got an intermittant sensor fault to me, given the occasional rough or down on power running.

Usual suspects would be the Lambda, N75 or MAF. Try getting the fault codes read.

Cheers, MAF is ok, new one 6 months ago... Service 6 months ago at the same time, not sure on N75 or Lambda, will pop into my local and plug it in to VAG COM, just a pain really that my driving is consistant yet my mpg isnt??

On a side note, when i first start my car up in the morning the revs are around 1,500 for about 40 seconds, have you tried driving the car when the revs are high, its drives like a pig! most of the time i let the revs drop before i drive, but on the odd time i will need to get away in a hurry and just go.... the mpg when you do this is roughly 6mpg!!!!!! LOL

Last two days i,ve done a return trip of about one forty miles to Preston and back. Got 38.7 on journey there, 35.1 on journey back. Both trips in the rain. This morning again in the rain only got 34.7 and on the way home in mainly dry weather got 32.5. Climatronic wasn't changed. Didn,t drive different mainly at seventy to eighty, same journey times. My car has just had a service and tyres, what vagcom faults would i need to look out for if my prob is the same as 888's:confused:.

Something not right there; looks a bit like the cold start enrichment or throttle position sensor. Idle on an EMS engine is usaually 800 to 1000 rpm cold, falling to 800 hot.
