Felicia keeps losing power then cuts out

Featured Replies

Hi, I recently bought a P reg ('97) Felica 1.3Lxi.

It was fine for a couple of days, then the charging light started coming on when driving. It finally stayed on and the battery went dead. After charging the battery overnight, I managed to get to drive to a garage and got a new replacement alternator fitted. It was fine for another couple of days. Then it struggled to start, even though the engine turned over well. When it did start, the engine stalled everytime I put my foot on the accelerator.

I removed the plug from the automatic choke at the rear of the carburettor and the car started and ran well, until I had done about 20 miles, then the engine gradually lost power until it stopped. Letting it cool for about 5 minutes allowed me to start it again and drive a further 5 miles before it lost power and stopped again. I tried replacing the choke plug but this reintroduced the earlier fault of stalling when I touched the accelerator.

Has anyone any ideas how I might fixed the problems which I assume are related.

I'm sorry that this is so long, and I hope I haven't bored you, but I am at a loss as to know what to do to fix my car.

Welcome to Briskoda deepdaleuk :)

The reason the "automatic choke" plug stopped it working is because it's not an automatic choke, it's one of the engine sensors for the ECU/injection (the i means injection) and probably the engine temp sensor (though I may be corrected on this) and when this fails, it will show the symptoms you're experiencing.

Replacing the sensor will probably get you back up and running in no time.

HTH :)
