intermittant diesel pre-heat light

Featured Replies

Hi, I've searched the posts but not found a fault like my Felly's.

The glow plug indicator on the dash sometimes fails to come on even tho it's icy out. The car won't start and it normally does easily. When it did light and start I rushed it to my Skoda dealer for a check. It wouldn't start again in their car park.

They have just phoned and told me that the injector pump is faulty and will cost me getting on for 2K to fix! Surely and intermittent fault in the pre-heating circuit can't be caused by the injector pump?

I know I could probably get the pump replaced for under 1K but I'm not convinced that the pump is the problem. Can anyone tell me if this tale could be true please?

Next time you try to start it, connect a circuit tester between one of the glow plug terminals and the cylinder head and see if it registers a current when the dashboard indicator lights up (or not as the case may be). This will prove whether or not the glow plug circuit is to fault.

I really don't believe that the injector pump's to blame.

I'd agree that it's probably the glow-plugs rather than the injection pump.

My dad had a similarish issue with a new ZX diesel. It was the glow plug control box, rather than the plugs themselves. I'm pretty sure it's not the injection pump!

Thanks Ken, i've just looked in a Haynes manual and it looks like all the clever stuff is managed in a little black box called the diesel control unit. It's a plug in device that sits next to the glow plug relay and fuse. It's not exactly a cheap part but if that's the thing that's playing up then it could be a simple swap. My car had to be left at the garage while they sourced a price for a re-conditioned injector pump, I'll be asking them about the control unit tomorrow.

I would definitely spend a little time poking an prodding at various wires and connections before dipping into the piggy bank to the tune of 2K.

Diesel Injection Pumps are remarkable items and generally VERY reliable, when they do fail it tends to be well flagged and usually as a consequence of some error or omission on the owner/operator`s part.......Namely dirty fuel or water ingress.......

would the "preheat" connected to the drivers door handle have anything to do with this?
