Do I keep or do I sell?

Featured Replies

I've started a new job which means a round trip of 160 miles per commute. My Edition 100 isn't exactly low mileage anyway at 35k, though this is going to really pile on the miles and make the car worthless in a couple of years.

Also, the roads in Sheffield where my new job is, are terrible. The car has lowered suspension (Eibach), and it's not doing it any good going over the 18 million pot-holes on the way in and out.

What I'm thinking is that I could spend £2k - £3k on a Diesel Mondeo, Vectra, Passat - whatever, that has already lost the bulk of depreciation. May cost more in maintenance being an older car, but would it be that much?

Another thing to consider is that I'm doing shifts, and often the car is parked on the street in the city centre over night. So far it's been fine, but I don't know how long it will be until someone crashes into it / scratches it / pukes on it.

How much do you think I'd be likely to get for the Superb? It's a PD130 manual Edition 100 with 35k and Full Skoda History (two services).

Any thoughts?

[Edit to say that its a 55 reg - October 2005]

Used Superbs depreciate fast. Yours has the best engine/gearbox combination of all of them - mechanically it's a much better bet than a Mondeo or Vectra.

Why don't you put the suspension back to original spec and keep it? If you pile on the miles, at least you'll get your money's worth out of it. Sell it now and you'll lose a packet.

Any ideas how much it would be to put the normal suspension back on (parts and labour). The car looks excellent lowered, but I think the ride is too harsh. Car was like that when I bought it - didn't realise at first as I hadn't seen any other Superbs to compare it against!

If you put a "wanted" ad on this forum, there must be people with lowered Superbs with the old bits to sell. Make sure the donor vehicle was fitted with the same engine.

I would keep it , these cars can do many miles with no problems, just look at some taxis, keep it for ever.

I agree completely.

Considering it 'only' worth just over 10k (a same age/mileage Elegance is 9.5k), i would keep it and enjoy what you have.

Still not totally convinced about keeping it. It only makes sense if I'm going to run it into the ground, though I've been thinking about changing it since I'd had it for about 2 months! (Got it when it was 7 months old). I've now had it 19 months.

Problem arises if I do decide to get rid of it in a year, when I'll have more than doubled the mileage to 70k+. It'll then be worth £6.5kish, or maybe even less as there'll be a new Superb out. That's £4k depreciation at least in one year. £4k buys quite a decent car.

I'm sure I'll still have it in a year, as I'm always thinking about getting shot, but never actually do it

At least if I do keep it, I can take it to Jabba in late summer when it hits 60k and the warranty expires........

Entirely up to you whether you sell or not mate and only you can make that decision, for me I would rather ride in something comfortable to and from work regardless of distance....

Post up some pics of your Edition 100 and the ride height as it may be helpful to others looking to do this mod in the future....

Find out what you can really get for it - it will be so little you'll keep it.

That is defo the answer, one of the superbs strong points is it ride over bumpy surfaces, so unless you are short of money and want to run around in an old passat you have the right vehicle for the job already!

Can't see the pic from here as they've banned photobucket from work :( Anyway, from memory it's probably one I took up in Kintyre, on either side of Campbeltown Loch

As for the Superb, I've still got it and have bought an old Saab 9000 to use on the night shifts. The Saab's worth very little, so happier leaving that on the streets of Sheffield City Centre overnight than the Superb. Keeping the miles down on the Superb too :)

I like Saabs before anyone brings up the fact that it isn't exactly the cheapest hack to do the miles! (It's a 2.3 Turbo auotmatic too :rotz: ) I'm getting mid 30's mpg out of the Saab which I'm most pleased with. It has a big hatch which is good for trips to the dump too :D

Think I've got used to the potholes in Sheffield now as I don't notice them so much now (still got the lower suspension).

I think you did right not selling, ok I've had issues with Skoda, but pound for pound the Superb is as good as most other things less spec'd and dearer.

Keep it Kev imho.

Nice wheels btw ;)

bloody hell i'd move!!!!

It's only a "temporary" position, albeit for a year at least.

Must remember not to bring the Skoda to work when I've got to park on the street. It's been windy up here in Sheffield today, and a large board has blown against the rear side of the Superb leaving several scratches and scuffs on the paintwork. :( None are down to the metal, but it'll be another trip to Chipsaway...

When I'm working weekedays and Saturday day, it goes under cover in a multi storey NCP, but on nights and Sundays the car park is closed and everyone has to park on the streets.

Swap the suspension for Carolyns!! 130PD Comfort.

At least the superb eats the miles really easily. At the end of the day it is what they are built for.

Cheers

Vrs white thats 1 **** hot motor dude !

And Keep your car man I had a very similar choice this week and I stuck with my Furby and just modified it to the demands I needed.

Does anybody know anyone thats selling some 17" mk1 octy vrs wheels ????

Koni FSD if they do them to soften up the ride but still let you make progress when you want.

Might be a good option and then keep the car.
