driving without power steering fluid

Featured Replies

My 2002 Fabia is leaking power steering fluid. I have topped it up but the closest garage is a 2 hour drive. If the power steering fluid leaks out will I damage the

power steering pump by continuing to drive without refilling the fluid?

I had a leak on my old rover, so bad that it made a whoreish noise when steering.

Just top it up before you go and avoid 3-point-turns etc on your way there. normal driving doesnt use the pump a whole lot.

do you know where it's leaking from? usually these leaks just require cutting down a hose and sticking on a fresh jubilee clip.

I beleive the fluid is used for lubircation as cars with low or no pas make a fair bit of noise

You can sometimes disable the PAS on the Fabia by switching off the ignition while coasting and starting the engine by popping the clutch rather than the starter motor, this sometimes causes the PAS Light to come on, but the steering is really (Dangerously) Heavy and It's probably not something that is reccomended, but I guess it would beat running the pump without lubrication?

Or carry some with you and top up as you drive

Someone more technical will probably be along to answer this one

You can ask the garage but personally, one of the first questions I'd ask is "is it safe?". ISTR that power steering fluid is flammable.

Can't help but this this isn't an official way of disabling the PAS..

My Pump went and I drove with out assistance for a week. My Dad is linked to the automobile industry and I called him for advice.. the steering HAS to be designed to work with out assistance in case of mechanical failure.... my point is, yeah.. it IS really heavy... but I would never call it dangerous mate.. just avoid having to turn the wheel when not moving.. does make parking a heavy fisted game though..

I've just realized.. this doesn't help you at all does it.. sorry,

Driving a Fabia with failed PAS isn't like driving a car with no pas, I beleive you have to turn all of the electo-hydraulic assembally as well as the wheels, even at 30-40mph I found it very heavy

IIRC jason drove without PAS on his fabia for quiet sometime after the steering angle sensor failed. He did many miles including a trip to CZ and back. However in his case the system still had fluid in it.

You could pop out the left hand bumper grille/fog lamp and pull the plugs off the pump. I have never tried this and don't know what the effects would be, most certainly a warning light and error codes. The steering will be very heavy. We did have a customer who drove in with a dead PAS unit and it didn't affect the rack.

If it is leaking it could be the seals in the steering rack that are at fault , thats what happened to mine , I hope for your wallet's sake it isnt , as it cost nearly £700 to fix.

Its illegal to drive a vehicle with defective steering, if your caught you could lose your licence.

Just get it towed to the garage.

Could you pull the fuse for the PAS pump? running the pump without fluid will screw it.

If you think the rack is shagged you could try one of the better PAS seal products until you can save up for a new rack.

2 hours to a garage? A Skoda dealer or any garage?
