Hi all- been a while!

Anyway- the time has come to sell my Fun as I have a new Fabia being delivered on Friday- wooooo Christmas gift to myself!

Anyway- I have this issue whereby the Fun stalls if I'm going along and dip the clutch to change gear- usually coming upto a roundabout for example (but then I do live in Milton Keynes so I am 'usually coming upto a roundabout'!)

Anyone had this before? I really would like to be able to see the Fun go to a good home that will be happy with it rather than just flog it for nothing to someone who will thrash 10000 miles out of it and scrap it, so I figure I'd like to sort this out.

I dont really want to take it to a garage for diagnostics as this can be expensive and its all dependent on someone buying the thing!

I am about to buy a fun, but i have never been in the engine bay. But im a bit of an expert on audi 5 cylinder engines. And they have a tendency to do this kind of thing.

This is what you do on audis at least. It works well.

You find the screw that adjusts the rpm when no throttle on.

You screw it out. Try to count how many turns you do so that you dont miss that bad when you screw it in again.

On audis this pin (the tip of that screw) is dirty and somehow this causes behavior like you described.

This is also supposed to be possible to do while engine running(with a friend revving the engine above idle). You could also spray some kind of solvant in there. Carborator cleaner or something like that.

I have not tried it with the engine running myself.

But as i said i have no experience with the fun or the engine itself, but i have done this on many audis. Actually done a couple of good buys and sells because of this. You can shave the price of a car pretty much if it stops like that.

A quick fix could also turning the up the idle rpm a bit. It might be a bit low. Its not a new car anymore.

Another thing might be new plug leads, plugs and airfilter. Just regular maintainance. Might get you a better price and is nice to wright in the ad.

Thanks Chris- I'll have a look at that... well, I'll ask my technical neighbor to look at it while I make him a cup of tea!

Any other ideas? Throttle body- or is that where I will find this screw?

Yeah i think so. Its the 1.6l engine right? Most/all funs are delivered with it?

If im not wrong thats basicly and old vw golf engine. I googled around for this problem on old golfs and here is some possible faults others have mentioned:

Water in fuel

Air/fuel mix

But i also found lots of people mentioning the same thing with the idle screw. But also mentioning that the 1.6 engine comes adjusted to a very low ideling rpm originally from factory. So you might have a quick fix by just turning up the screw a bit.

I think your neighbor will know where the screw is/find it if he is a bit technical. I hope it works

If you're braking too i think this could also be due to a leak in the brake servo so ive heard before.

Thanks guys... are there other symptoms with the break servo?

It depends on where it may be leaking. If there's a leak between the manifold and the valve, then probably not (and this is the most likely place), if the problem is with the valve or the servo, the braking action will become stiff after the engine is turned off rather than after a couple of pumps. The engine will probably be running rough across the rev range too as more air is being drawn into the engine than the ECU is providing fuel for.

I have had an intermittent issue of a pad not fully returning- could this be linked to a servo failure?

How can I test it myself?

Cleaning the throttle body out sometimes helps as well - I had a similar issue on one of my 1.6's

Oh- no... the pedal is fine, braking is fine, maybe not as responsive as it used to be (new pads and discs recently though) just this odd noise- less worried about this than the stalling thing- I just wondered if it was a link to the Brake Servo?

I dont want to spend much on it cos I only want £1250 for the car!

These are all about cutting out/stalling etc. and the first thread is actually abouit stalling when braking at roundabouts! :D

I think a way to test the brake servo is to have pressure on the pedal and then start the car. Correct me if im wrong but i think the pedal is supposed to move gently inwards as the engine starts(if all is well).

But returning to the possible leak of vacum:

I have also always used "starting gas" around the hoses and connections when checking for leaks in vacum like this. When the car is ideling and if it has a leak around a hose or something it should suck in the gas and rev up a little bit. When you hear the rpm going up just take more care and find out exactly where the leak is. Fix/change the problem.

You Guys are ace! Thanks for all this- as soon as I can I'm gonna try to sort this all out... for now its Christmas and time to be excited about the brand new Fabia arriving tomorrow evening!
