I think it's because they take longer to warm up from colder temps, and that means more fuel used.

I've noticed in mine that in colder weather, the oil and water temp guages are lower than normal when at full operating temperature (according to the dash)

Assuming everything else is the same, I'd have expected the consumption to be the same or better, due to the colder slightly denser air. Any sign of increased smoke, tougher starting, rough tick-over or a different fuel supplier?

colder temp=longer to warm up. also cold air means more fuel for the mixture, meaning less mpg.

In my car I am getting less than 30 mpg, with normal driving.
