Construction of Panel Filters

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Probably been covered a thousand times, but I want to know what each of the different performance Panel Filters are made from, and from your experience which is the most durable and easy fit etc etc etc etc :)

K&N panel filter - fabric filter material (cloth ?) sandwiched between layers of fine wire mesh, mounted in a rubber / poly frame, which aligns with the grooves in the airbox body and lid. Very durable, easy to clean (but not too easy to dry in winter); simple fit, direct swap for OEM disposable filter. Reasonable cleaning / re-oiling instructions in the cleaning kit, sold separately (and expensive for what it contains @ 17 euro).

Does that fit the bill?

K&N are Cotton Gauze filters, as are GreenAir.

Pipercross are Foam.

All are typically of good fitment.

Do they do one of these filters for the 100pd TDi engine as well?

Replaced mine at 30,000 and was thick with muck in it so i want to put a quality one in as a replacement.

If you are going to fit a panel filter then the green filter is supposed to be the best. The reason is that they do not come pre oiled in the cotton gauze which doesn't upset the 1.8T engines, so when you fit them you just dust them with a little oil. They typically give about three bhp more but also you get better fuel economy on normal driving. The K+N are also good but they come preoiled so don't suit the engine quite as well, much better once they have been washed and then just dusted in the filter oil. The pipercross are a foam filter and are much more heavily oiled.:)

Only once I have deviated from K&N filters, I fitted a Pipercross panel filter in 4x4 Sapphire Cosworth that I used to own, and within a couple of days I noticed a large amount of oil in the airbox, fearing the worst I had a compression check done and all was fine.

Turns out the foam was so thick it actually restricted the airflow through the filter, so the induction side started drawing oil up the breather from the sump!

Changed to a K&N which cured the problem straight away.

K&N all the way for me. K&N are just miles ahead of the rest with performance and life.

I consider anything else just a cheap imitation.

The same K&N direct replacement round filter has been in my suzuki SJ for 15+ years and it's still like new.

I wash it and oil it every summer cos of all the mukky stuff i go through and i love it.

Personally i think foam filters are absolute crap, and a bit of a gimmick.

Also. Pipercross filters are for *****.

i need a beer.

merry chrsitmas all........

haha the word **** gets blocked!!!

Do they do a K&N for a 1.9TDi 100PD? anyone know?

From what ive heard green are the best.

Plus K n N iz gettn waaaay too chavvy, u know wot a mean Bruv?
