Music reverberation question please?

Featured Replies

Q: Why music through speakers makes my ears zing sometimes like descent on aeroplane? I have a bog standard Cambridge set on the computer attached to a bass (sub-woofer is too grand for this set methinks) thingy. Son always plays things loud (as if it's Wembley Stadium) but a lot of times it's not the noise it's the reverberation in ear drums, like a sci fi movie where head will explode  Is it me? Doesn't seem to bother him. Clearly there's a pitch I'm not happy with. *What to do*

Yes I could wear ear plugs, remove myself, etc. Just don't understand why it should be via these speakers. If it was coming through his guitar amps and pedals, it would make sense, but that noise is just "too loud" "screechy" whatever - doesn't "zing" my head. Any ideas except that my brain is on a different plane ;)

sounds like you're getting a lot of sound at your particular resonant frequency

The 'annoyance/discomfort' factor at low frequencies (20-250Hz) is much greater.

At those sorts of frequencies rooms can be forced into resonance.

You can get standing waves so you get pockets of quiet and loud as you move around.

Most international standards on environmental protection now set noise limits at the average threshold of audibility for these low frequencies, such is the 'unpleasantness'!

One of the most interesting aspects of this is how some people are completely immune and others are tormented! Other descriptions are 'like having your ear buffeted by an open car window', 'feeling pressure on the ear', 'slapped over the ears with cupped hands', 'nausea inducing' etc.

Detach the sub-woofer!

Remember doing experiments on the frequency of sound waves in Physics at school and one of the girls feeling quite ill when the machine was "accidentally" left on at around 25Hz. :D

when parked on my rear drive, the Fabia makes the front door rattle with the engine on lol

Many thanks for replies :) Interestingly, Babs, I get said "zinging" in my ickle Fabia sometimes also :holmes: Perhaps I'll swap it for one of those made from cake and do a cheap mod of making it lighter by eating the back seats - I'm no fool :P

Yes diesel engines and other reciprocating machinery (pumps etc.) are know sources of LFN. You're obviously sensitive to it. Environmental Health Officers used to label people as nutters or think they had tinnitus (because they couldn't hear it themselves).
