When to change gearbox oil?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Car has now done just under 67k and was wondering when / if it's required to change the gearbox oil?

I've been getting a little vibration when changing gear, it's more likely the clutch though (but no slipping).

Thanks :)

As I understand it, the gearbox oil is not part of the service schedule, so I guess it would stay in for the life of the vehicle. Personally I would go by 60k as a maximum.... I changed mine at about 40k

Hmm, this is interesting.

Why do you say 60k maximum? I noticed you changed yours, what mileage did you change it at, and did you notice a difference? (Smoother gearchange?!).

I wonder why it's not part of the service if it makes a difference?

How much would it cost to get done do you know? Although I could be tempted just to do it myself :)

Oil stays in for the life of the car in theory

Our gearchange started playing up at just over 100,000 miles, (octy 1 110 tdi) changing the oil was a revelation, super smooth box again.

One tip from bitter experience, make sure the filler will undo BEFORE you drain the oil, it took a skilled mechanic about 20 mins to tease our filler out after he had drained out the oil. he had never had one like it before but yours might be the next !!

Did the MK I at about 50k and the difference was amazing.

I used Millers TRX Fully Synthetic 75-90 gear oil :)

The first one on this webpage?;

MILLERS OILS - A World Leader in Lubrication Technology

How much is needed, 2 litres?

I'm surprised such a big difference can be had after only 50k miles, could you elaborate on this please? :)

would the fact that my car doesn't have the smoothest of changes, usually reverse and first, be to do with the oil? ( it is sometimes very smooth, other times very not!) was planning on having the ARB done end of the month so could get them to do it at the same time.

Car is not quite at 123k now.

Yes that is the one.

A TDI 110 needed 2L and I still have a sealed 1L bottle sitting around.

Was very good, but the VW stuff is fine too.

IMHO avoid the silkoline stuff as while it is good a few people say the octy doesn't like it :(

I did mine purely because my Landcruiser quotes 40k for gearbox and diff oil changes... mad logic but it works for me :D
